This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

dude they said it was a bad look to use fanart icons period, but that if you were GOING to, the least you can do is credit. maybe they meant to say it isnt a bad look with credit, or maybe they even meant to say "it's a bad look to commission icons from fanart", but what they said was literally "it's generally a faux pas to use fanart icons around here", which is simply not true.

someone else in this thread already said credited fanart is the norm nowadays so the need to qualify already kinda proves that anon was right? it is a bad look if you don't credit. will it stop people from using fanart icons, obviously not, but saying that it's not mildly stigmatized is kinda ehhh of you

even the person who offered to make fanart icons has a laundry list of rules attached

I'm having trouble understanding where you're making these connections from what I said. Maybe I didnt say it clearly so let me try again.

It is a bad look to repost unsourced fanart without permission in any context, icons or otherwise, so yes of course it is stigmatized to misuse fanart. This is not unique to icon usage.

however many fanartists, including myself, have been personally asked for permission to use our art for icons. I have been asked often enough that I have put a blanket statement in my TOS that anyone can use my fanart for icons as long as they dont ask me to make them because I don't want to make them.

many fanart makers go out of their way to source and ask permission when making icons from fanart, and so when they post icons for public use, those icons are all sourced in the very same page.

I have never encountered someone saying that using sourced fanart for icons was a faux pas before this thread, and before a certain point people didn't even care if you sourced them or not. So no, in my experience, I have not witnessed the "mild stigmatization" of the use of fanart icons the way you are describing it, unless I'm misunderstanding what you mean by stigmatization.
