This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

It is absolutely not a faux pas. There might be a few people who are purists or turn their noses up at them but the vast majority of dw is fine with fanart icons. Just source responsibly.

+1 fanart icons are still a thing, though many people try a lot harder to at least source them properly these days

they're right when it comes to the commissioning part, tho. i don't run commissions myself, but i'd imagine it's bc it's kinda not great optics-wise to be charging ppl actual money for cropping and color-filtering another person's art

If I, an artist, drew fanart of a character and someone else paid someone to crop and adjust the saturation or whatever I would not care at all. Just credit me and link back to my art page. Good icon makers have an eye for how 100x100 squares require a different approach to be legible and presentable and pleasing. I totally understand the optics though, I can not speak for all artists.

Some characters (like book or retro video ganes) have absolute dogshit options for nice icon material other than fanart, it's tough.

Yeah, as another artist, I would be pretty ticked off if someone else paid someone to edit my work into icons, even with credit. It's just not how I intended the work to be presented, and I'd rather be commissioned to draw art made-for-icons anyway.

which is why it would be a faux pas to use YOUR fanart that way. the use of fanart icons is based on the permission given by the artist. that doesn't make the use of fanart icons inherently an rp faux pas, though, especially when it has been accepted (and fanartists have been having their permission asked for) since the LJ days.

you're absolutely lying saying ljrp had been asking permission from fanartists, no credit was the norm until the mid-2010s even when we had actual comic artists playing in the community

it has been commonplace to use fanart icons since the LJ days.

also, people still use fanart icons in DWRP, and now it is commonplace to credit.

i was NOT trying to say people commonly credited them those days. I wasnt there for that, I just have friends who were and have old accounts with fanart icons still on them.

fanart icons are fine. don't make stuff up.

what ISN'T FINE is:
- not crediting the artist
- using art that the artist has said they don't want used elsewhere
- removing watermarks/sigs/etc
- using art from someone else's commissioned artwork
