Can't decide which is worse: being given a DNI or nothing but pass-ag comments.

someone didn't give me a dni for years and instead just would shit on me or try to start shit with me in public so I ignored the shit out of them, because they did all this without ever interacting with me in the first place. I couldn't just 'not' interact with them bc i'd never talked to them before, they'd just comment on my stuff trying to start shit.

DNI lets me know right away so i can use my energy on other people. Its only personal if you take it personally.

Pass-agg for sure. It's a pain in the ass to find out months later that someone acting civil actually has a ton of issues with you and they're blaming it on you not to have noticed when they haven't said anything.

Like why waste my time? We could have both just ended things early instead of having grudges on both sides because of the refusal to communicate.

someone who makes pa comments instead of just giving a DNI shows that they can't communicate, which will fuck you over in a bunch of other ways too.

i would take the DNI over passive aggressive bullshit any day. just tell me not to tag you so we can stop waiting our time, jfc.

Sorry if this is a stupid question: I've never heard of someone getting hit with a DNI, is this common?

i wouldn't say it's UNcommon, though we don't toss them around as much as some communities. lots of people just ghost until hints are gotten. if a DNI is given, its probably not going to be public, it's going to be someone sending a PM asking to be left alone

there's a handful of people who put DNI to some notorious people in their preferences, but it's rare enough whenever it happens they get name dropped (which is stupid IMO, but it happens)

Most people here suck at communicating boundaries and would rather ghost, be PA in their tags/comments, or block as their version of DNI. Many people assume that, especially with being PA, you should get the hint that they don't want you around without saying so because they can always have plausible deniability by saying you just misread them or didn't understand them. It's a result of having unfortunately too many wankers who would throw them under the bus in anoncomms when places like wg actually had any sway on people's opinions in the past.

I have only ever had one DNI who actually told me straight and that was over a decade ago. The rest, even recently, were people who would rather be extremely PA (really annoying) or ghost/block (so much more preferable and earns more of my respect).

ime it really depends on whether you're talking about dni as a player (fairly rare) or just someone opting out of a particular character (not that uncommon at all). i've had people opt out of some of my characters who had some triggery stuff in their backstories before, but i've never had anyone give me a blanket dni as a player.

this is my experience too. i have never been hit with a dni as a player, but there is a select character of mine that sometimes get folks hitting their opt out post to ask not to be tagged.

speaking for myself, it is a huge relief when people use my opt out/dni post for this character. i respect someone who won't waste my time and be upfront that this character isn't to their tastes. the honesty is a breath of fresh air.

it's only fun if we're both/all having fun.
