Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.
Do not solicit money, Dreamwidth points, or other currency unless you are offering a good or service in return.

how many of you have ever written a character that was super niche in their canon and had very little backstory? there's a character i really want to throw at canonmates for PSLs but i feel weirdly guilty about it, like i'm making them write with what is basically my OC. any encouragement or experiences would be nice

It depends on how much info there is to work with for castmates.

An old one people had issues with was Matt from Death Note who used to be popular to play but had nothing to work with and was basically an OC, all you knew was he came from the same institution as Mello and that they work together, but he had no workable personality so people just made it up.

If you are playing a character who appeared in like one episode, had a clear personality, and enough of a background to work with (example: was an orphan, now a detective in paris) then I think that's enough to work with.

Personality is more important than backstory in dwrp I feel.

this. you can have one episode characters who give you plenty to build off of for rp if their personality is clearly established in the little screentime they have.

i personally love writing characters like this

to above anon's point i played matt from dn back in the day

not everyone will want to play with you but there will be people who will want to so just do what's fun. don't harass anyone who doesn't want anything to do with your character and you'll be fine

+1 i've played a character like this for years

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
i've tagged with plenty of characters/castmates like this and had no issue at all. i was happy to see them as well. go for it!

(Anonymous) 2024-08-04 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
give it a try, anon. you're not making anyone do anything.

honestly, some of the most memorable and worthwhile rp i've ever done has involved characters like you've described, who are just this shy of OCs but still designed with specific characters/fandoms in mind. those who stand out in particular are characters I played off of with my own major canon characters, so it's absolutely possible to engage and develop longstanding CR. i never would have imagined some of the amazing headcanon that i have now because of those super-minor-basically-OC characters.

i won't lie... you might not meet much interest right away (or at all!); you might have to work harder to establish your character and integrate; but i believe it's absolutely worth your time and effort if you already have some inspiration AND you start out with the understanding that sometimes it just doesn't work in the end.

(i you want any more tales of my bygone days with some amazing fandom OCs, feel free to PM mightysoxer)

i hope you decide to go for it, anon :3

i'm having a blast with my one episode wonder, personally

if it's for psls do whatever you want. that kind of character can be really frustrating in games but psls are the opposite of regimented. As long as you and your partner are into it nothing else matters

Fleshing out characters with very little canon is one of my favorite things to do in psls! You have so much more flexibility outside of games. Some of my favorites in the past included entire casts of what were essentially canon OCs, characters who theoretically exist or are mentioned but never seen, like parents/siblings of canon characters. As long as you communicate with who you're playing with, so they generally know what to expect from the character the way you're writing them, I find people can be pretty receptive to this! And in some cases, giving them another side to their personality that veers into AU can also be fun, if it's something the canon characters don't know about.

This is honestly my favorite kind of character to play, and I also enjoy playing off of them. I straight up wouldn't enjoy roleplay nearly as much as a hobby if I couldn't engage with this kind of thing. I've had plenty of success in games, too, not just PSLs! It's entirely possible to be reasonable and thoughtful about it and have a great time.

Something I always enjoy doing with this kind of character is diving into how that absence of information impacts their character. If a character is so background that it's unclear if they have any family or friends, the answer could be that they don't have any close relationship. That characterization can add a sort of desperate loneliness to both chipper or gloomy characters. Figuring out what's missing from a character and how lacking that essential character trait could influence them into different story threads can be a great thrill to unravel.
