Rundown: rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.

Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.

out of interest what sort of acknowledgement would have worked for you? i personally cringe to see things like public network posts for religious holidays, especially in games that aren't 1:1 earth analogues.

honestly something as simple as “man i sure do miss eating sandwiches this week”. especially when they mentioned being “pretty religious” in a post only a week or so earlier…

again, this is a character whose faith is canonically important to them and yet in this game they’re going around celebrating christmas and easter and honestly that is cringey to me.

A character not making public announcements about their religious holidays is no big deal, but a Jewish character celebrating Christmas and Easter while not mentioning Passover is a whole different situation. I think that might be worth crit, if the player is open to it.

there's "this player just isn't that interested in playing up the religious aspects of the character" and there's "this player is actively having their character practice the wrong religion". idk why op homed in on the former when the latter is a much bigger issue??

sorry, i thought the topic was “letters you’ll never send” not “itemized list of grievances”.

i wrote what i would write to the player in question, because if i was actually going to confront them i wasn’t going to start off that harshly.

but maybe that’s just me and you like beating people over the head with mistakes they’ve made.

Prefacing this with the fact that I'm not Jewish, so I am not familiar with any nuanced reasons why it might be a bigger deal, but...

I'd personally give Christmas and Easter a pass, because while they're primarily Christian holidays, technically, they have become very secularized to the point where people of any religion could kind of celebrate them (especially someone like an X-man who lives and works with people of a ton of cultural backgrounds and who could feasibly enjoy traditions from any religion), and games do tend to base monthly events off of them, especially Christmas.

Not observing their own holidays as well after mentioning being religious is the bigger deal, but that might come down to the player themselves being unfamiliar with the Jewish calendar. If it bothers you, bring it up to the player! But you might have better luck bringing it up with some resources in hand. (That they should have already looked up themselves, yes, but. Well. Clearly haven't.)

I'm Jewish, and ... no, absolutely not, re: Easter. I can definitely relate to characters participating in Christmas even though I wouldn't do so IRL. But Easter no.

The only way I’d find it acceptable is if someone is in a multifaith relationship. Esp if there’s kids. And hopefully the partner/s are just as involved in Passover/Yom Kippur/etc.
