having also read both, i strongly disagree that claymore is berserk but with women; they're both dark fantasy universes where the protagonist is a fighter and there is body horror, sure, but i would argue that's where the similarities end. the protagonists are different personality-wise, their relationships with their closest circle of supporting characters are very different (clare's bond with the other claymores is something she is initially thrust into without any agency, she cannot walk away from it without significant danger to herself, and it is only with time that it's transformed into something beyond a cut-throat hierarchy [literally!] by them fighting together, getting to know each other, and making sacrifices for each other; guts stumbles into his relationships with griffith and casca in a similar manner of not really having much choice at first, but once he establishes himself, he has much more personal agency there), the scope of the plot and themes is much more expansive in berserk versus claymore (claymore, i would argue, tells the story of a specific group of women, the way they have been hurt by the world, and the people they become because of it and in spite of it; berserk is similar, but it expands on those themes to try to make a point about the nature of humanity, evil, and predetermined destiny vs free will; ymmv on whether it succeeds, but it certainly tries)... don't get me wrong -- i adore berserk, and i quite like claymore too, but i picked up the latter hoping it would scratch the same itch as the former, and it very much didn't. it fell short in some regards, but i think that was my own fault for expecting it to be something it isn't, and i think the thing that it actually is is solid enough that it deserves to be recommended on its own merit rather than as "berserk but with women"
