As someone who used to frequent 4chan in high school because I thought it made me one of the cool kids, it never ceases to amuse me how some anons treat something as tame as wankgate as this great big lawless hellscape. Like sure, trolls start stupid shit like trans wank sometimes, but mods always lock that shit down. It's not like anyone's over there spamming slurs and arranging Habbo Hotel raids

and yet newbies still go there, get lost in the sauce, and lose their ever-loving minds about those meanies on the meanie forums

typical "i went to 4chan as a kid so nobody can ever complain about any website" weirdo unable to grasp the point because of their own edge

it's almost like people's standards for the amount of trolling and bigotry in a comm they find tolerable lowers the older they get because they grow out of it. or most people anyway

Typically people grow thicker skin as they get older because they stop giving a shit about what ignorant people say. This community is evolving backwards and it's a trip to watch.

speaking as a former internet edgelord who got therapy and recovered, this feels more like op got traumatized by early aughts internet and theyre wearing it as a badge of honour and proof that theyre Hardcore rather than growing up and developing some emotional intelligence

Genuine question, what parts of internet edgelord culture would you say were traumatising? I know there there was a lot of shock stuff/gore etc that was easily accessible

shock stuff, gore, lolcow culture/bullying being way more prevalent and less frowned upon than it is now. not to mention shitty older teens/adults in these circles perpetuating their own trauma by exposing younger teens to shock content, kids games were a common target for this kind of thing

if you got pulled into one of these circles there was a general air of "being an aggressive nasty shithead is cool and if anyone has a problem theyre a snowflake who cant take any criticism" and that does stuff to you when youre young and impressionable and think you have shit to prove. i think a lot of kids who got suckered into this bullshit are now not getting therapy they need as adults to get them out of it

as other people have said, finding something in poor taste, unfunny and offensive isn't the same as shaking and crying and being hashtag triggered or whatever you're thinking. it's weird that you think being cool with the casual and incessant transphobia misogyny and racism on wankgate somehow equates to being thick skinned. it's more a sign of arrested development imo
