This is handy advice for people worried about prose but that's not really the issue I'm having! I'm confident that my prose is fine and am more worried about the actual tagging side of things and making sure I have hooks and things to bounce off of or engage with which I don't think fanfic would help with.

This is basically my routine now. I took an TP break for a few months, pre-break I could sit for hours at a time tagging but now I use tagging as a quick break from chores and other stuff I'm doing around the apartment. If im not super slammed at work and actually have time on my lunch break to treat it like a break and not computer work time + food i'll pop out a phone tag or two

If a character never shows any interest in romance in their source canon, either due to the strict runtime or the plot itself being not-romantic, would you consider it OOC to ship them? Why or why not?

There are plenty of things characters never do in canon just because it's not relevant to the story. Would you think it was OOC to have a character read a book if it never comes up in canon?

Maybe I'd consider it OOC if the character explicitly said in canon that they have no interest in romance, but even then: who cares, it's pretendy funtimes and most of us like shipping so I can't imagine anyone would judge too hard.

depends on a case-by-case basis for me. if the character expresses or shows they're adverse to romance, or has some deep insurmountable trauma relating to it, or is committed to forever honoring their dead spouse or w/e, maybe not. but if it's just a case of romance never popping up because my character's detonating a bomb in the 5 seconds when they aren't fighting aliens and giving a soul-balming heroic speech, i'm fine assuming they might swipe right on an average tuesday.

i hate the game i'm in. it's boring, the events are bad, most of the players weird me out, the tags i get are bland. but there aren't really any other good options out there right now, so i feel like i'm just kind of stuck with it until something else comes along.

I think the current crop of horror games is because people are bored with SOL-heavy games where nothing really happens, and horror is the most obvious way to make sure your new game doesn't become super SOL-heavy, at least not right away. Eventually the pendulum will swing back the other way and people will be sick of horror and want more fluffy SOL again.

That said, I wish there was a game like this that was also weird/hard kink friendly. Not every character has to be super vanilla and weird or "out there" kinks don't automatically have to equate to dub/noncon. Although tbh my ideal smut game would find a way to accommodate fluffy cute smut and sleazy dub-con alike tbh, since I tend to alternate what I'm in the mood for.

Not if it's because the canon storyline doesn't have the focus or runtime to accommodate it, no. That just means we're probably not seeing their whole life/story.

If they outright express distaste for romance in canon, then it might be OOC depending on the context of them saying that. But I also don't really care if people are mildly OOC as long as their writing is still engaging and it's not in a way that seems to miss the entire point of the character.

if its one of those cases where the entire crux of the character is the relationship they share with their significant other in canon and its key to them as a character and the canon on the whole then i side-eye a little

Echoing what another top heavy (lol) rper up there said, just having some interaction is the key for good smut writing, I think. I write quite a bit of D/s scenes and chief percentage of those involve my character restricting the receiving character's ability to react much at all. But wonderful writers have shown me that it's still possible to keep a good connection between the characters through introspection and focusing on stuff like eye contact or skin contact, or simply the noises their characters are making. Which should illustrate a point that even with heavy restrictions it's possible and in a less kink-heavy situation there's really no excuse.

Everyone likes to read their character being wanted and desired. So even the most hard-to-get ice princesses and princes probably should at least give you some of that good old silent pining if nothing else.

And one more thing: If the character and relationship fits terms like top or bottom and you want that to be part of your smut writing, then stick to it. Gun-shy top is just as frustrating as a domineering bottom, UNLESS that is what you were going for, in which case, more power to you!

Which leads me to a final point: (I know, I lied) Chatting with your fellow player will trump all these advices. Just ask them what they like in a thread. Different strokes for different folks!

what does this mean

it kind of already is. i know this is super "ok then just drop" of me, and i'm trying not to let any of that negativity show to anyone else. until i find someplace else i'm just sort of phoning it in/trying to make whatever does work keep working. not silly enough to think i might magically change my mind about it, but it's better than being grouchy about it all the time. other than bitching about it here lol

Even on dreamwidth where people can be sticklers over canon, I think most people would consider this a dumb and over literal interpretation of the concept of canon. It's like saying Captain America doesn't poop because he never shat onscreen.

If this is a euphemism for sexuality wank, nobody will care if you headcanon the character as gay/straight/bi because in the situation you described there is no canon inclination either way. Even asexuality doesn't exclude shipping, since the definition doesn't exclude falling in love or having intercourse.

I've never really paid enough attention to notice other than being impressed when it seems like someone *is* tagging back to everything, especially on memes. If I see a giant nest of comments with multiple characters under a toplevel, I might make a note to hit that player up if/when I have a tag idea.

I don't think I can remember ever deciding not to tag someone based on how much/little they tagged back, but I've noticed tag-ins I've liked that have gone unanswered and tagged those players when I got the chance.
