Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Maybe focus on psls and memes for a bit? It sounds like a lot of the stress is game related.

loved the worldbuilding in this, hated the characters (first book, haven't read the other two)

Anything written by Guy Gavriel Kay, but if I had to recommend a specific one, I really loved and enjoyed The Lions of Al-Rassan. It's a beautiful historical fantasy, will give you complex court intrigue and intense character dynamics.

I'm actively playing in the game right now and have plans with several other players for a lot of things we'd like to do plot-wise in the next several months.

the malazan series. it's incredibly dense, complex, satisfying, heartbreaking, lore rich and rewarding.

the second and third books add a lot of context to the characters i feel. what specifically didn't you like about the characters, though?

Requested the first main book since that seems to be chronologically published first! Unless starting with the prequels is recommended?

da

It didn't help that I was trying to voice test a character and the sample wanted 10 comments just from me for the application, so the combination of no traction on the TDM + a large sample requirement means even if I did write an app it wouldn't get accepted, so I just gave up.

+1 to Malazan, it's huge and dense and the magic system is really interesting

however do be aware that the author likes to really drop the reader into the action with no knowledge, lots of the world building won't be explained at all and you sort of pick it up as you go along or notice it on a second read through, so it can be quite hard to get into

it's also very violent and gory and there's some graphic mention of rape and so on, it's quite dark as a series. but it's also really fantastic for lore. it started out as a ttrpg setting iirc and the author is a huge archaeology nerd so he knows how to build a realistic civilisation

no, read the main series first and then go back to the prequels if you like it

it's genuinely taken me years to get 2/3rds through the series, i love it but it's a lot!

it's been a while since i read it, but i found the personalities of the main characters grating and incredibly negative, especially around each other, and i didn't feel attached to them. i do think they could have been better fleshed out - maybe they were overshadowed by the intensity of the worldbuilding and needed more room to breathe. it sounds like the other books might have fixed this and i should give them a chance!

A lot is what I'm looking for! Long series I just like to double check reading order because sometimes there's a better way to read haha.

Thank you for the warning! I can handle dark stuff and learning as I go, for me it comes down to characters and how interesting the lore is to hook me.

hi-5 fellow malazan

thanks for mentioning the warning for reader anon, i completely failed to (i think because the characters it most affects are the ones whose books i revisit less). it's definitely on the darker end of fantasy, though i would describe it more as misery of life than the kind of torture porn you see in some other titles. that said, i think that's what i like about it: in this entire fantasy-rich series, the worst deeds, betrayals and hardships (and the most satisfying achievements, epiphanies and growth) are human.
