Help! My rp partner hasn't invited me to play our OTP in their game! (´・ω・`)

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not post personal information. This includes but is not limited to full names, addresses, phone numbers and so on.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

hold on let me get a small ladder to put next to the bad gay fetish cross you've nailed yourself to so that you can get down safely

You joke but people would get miffed here if you played Tony Stark as a 100% gay man tbh.

For characters that might canonically have some autism-associated traits... don't add your own "autism symptoms" that never appear in canon (especially stimming or tics). Play the character, not the DSM-IV handbook.

And remember that neurotypical people can also be shy, socially anxious, nerdy, awkward, introverted, blunt, asexual, rigid in their habits, obsessive, or be bad at eye contact or picking up on social cues, so it's not necessary to have an autism headcanon to play a character with these traits.

anon, they're just reposting the previous thread comment by comment to try and prove a point (though idk what the point is, as sexual orientation and gender identity are two very different things)

probably, but playing him as bisexual in theory and only ever actually threading him having gay sex wouldn't get any pushback. these days you could even get away with saying you only want to actually write m/m with pretty minimal fuss, and that used to be considered totally out of line like 4-5 years ago. everyone here has the memory of a goldfish, though.

I'm aware of that, I'm just saying their joke doesn't work.

I am getting flashbacks of that one anon who argued incest should be on the same level of acceptance as homosexuality

This really feels like you're saying that incest should be on the same level of acceptance as trans headcanons.

The idea of a "real bisexual" is its own can of worms in rl and in fiction, anon

The point is that you can't 'gotcha' people with the rules because they are different things that get treated differently. Sorry.

this thread is so weird wtf.

no it does not lol

sorry nobody wants to deal with offensive "trans" headcanons here, you will just have to go to twitter unless you can craft a character respectfully

play the character with the traits they're shown to have in canon. if they're socially awkward and can't look people in the eyes, then just play them as being socially awkward and unable to look people in the eyes. you don't need to make things any deeper than that.

this is the way

It's just really weird to me that you automatically equate playing a character as trans as not being respectful or acceptable. Like introducing the trans element is automatically bad in all situations. That feels like some weird anti-trans baggage.

sure, but what is it about the difference between gender identity and sexuality that makes one generally ok to headcanon and the other generally bad?

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2021-08-14 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
apparently "offensive portrayal" and "unhealthy self-projection" are the only two choices. it has never been done differently

(Anonymous) 2021-08-14 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
well, yes. but in general, there's a very different standard at play here. for gay/bi headcanons, it's generally okay unless you really take it too far - if you totally erase a character's canonical wife, for instance. for trans headcanons, it's considered too far by default, and a lot of people think it's bad 100% of the time.

I think if all most players wanted out of their character's gay headcanon is internalized homophobia, performative demonstrations of sexuality, and grappling with their gayness in a very fetishistic way, it would also be generally frowned upon

Im gonna buck slightly against the rest of the thread and actually say that dwrpers don't mind HCs as long as they don't change a character's personality and general behavior. There are some characters that are so subtextually autistic/trans/etc that people will barely notice if you headcanon them or not. But unfortunately in practice the people who make these HCs WANT to play out stuff like Hatsune Miku Hamilton binder, because otherwise why bother? That's why there's a conflict.

or completely misconstrued the issue with certain characters that were the target for headcanons.

(super long-term) otome game flavored psl

[personal profile] sockroute 2021-08-14 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
"pairings you want to play" not exactly but listen idk where else to ask or categorize this.

everyone on my timeline is playing bustafellows and tears of themis right now (though those aren't necessarily the themes i want) and it reminded me... i've always kind of wanted to find someone willing to commit to the crazy idea of an otome game-styled psl with me. by which i mean, you make a main character and i make several others with routes of their own that can be pursued, and we go at it with plot twists and different story directions and endings depending on who's being romanced.

i know it's a lot of work and we'd end up having to build together for days, maybe weeks, after which it'd take months to play everything out. so finding someone who clicks with me to that extent in terms of style and writing might be a long shot, but hey, why not try at least? so for that purpose, i've compiled this long-ass list over here of things that i am and/or am not into; it's very general and broad, so by no means restrictive, but it should give an idea of what i'm like as a writer and how i tend to direct my plots and characterization. and, most importantly, how i'd approach a psl like this i guess.

sending me a pm or replying there (all comments screened) both work! feel free to ask me anything if you're interested, we'll probably both be screening for a lot since, as i mentioned this takes a ridiculous amount of communication and effort / time commitment. no hard feelings if it doesn't work out or end up leading anywhere.

Re: trans headcanons: I think the game environment would be so hostile that this would be making a lot of wank and trouble for yourself.

If you're not new to dwrp, I think if you have some trusted rp partners you could broach playing a character trans in a psl with them. If a friend I liked and trusted asked me to play that with them, I'd be open to doing that. I think at least some of the pushback you're getting is caused by players being anxious that someone playing a trans character will blur ic and ooc and, just as a for instance, take it personally if another character has an ignorant reaction to your character's identity. If your rp partner trusts you not to do that, you might have more luck getting play.
