poops efficiently from the butt

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

yeah coc probably isnt the right word for it but a lot of the whining and pushiness i see from players on anon comms really just amounts to their unsolicited opinions about what they think the game SHOULD be like.

but those opinions really can't be given much weight when theres so much room for disparity between what that players definiton of a successful game is and what that mod teams definition of a successful game is. if players went into a game understanding what the point of it was they might. MIGHT. be less inclined to backseat moderate so much.

hanging onto your D&D metaphor. some people like to play murder hobos. some people like epic open world homebrew sandboxes. some people like official game modules. if you wind up the only player at the table for a game type you don't like. that's not everyone else's fault. it's not necessarily the dms obligation to change it just for you either. but you might not have gone there if you'd knew the game was shooting for.

Real talk, as someone who has never modded, I always wonder, how much are mods affected by anon comms? Do mods hang out on anon comms and read negative feedback? There was a discussion recently between former mods on WG about whether mods do or should check anon comms. I have a feeling some mods do read anon comms and are swayed by them. The thing about that is anon comms give a skewed view of basically anything. (Just look at some of the fandom discussions, like Fate/ or MCU, lol.) I can't really tell mods not to read anon comms, but I can also see how this could go wrong pretty quickly if a mod is already feeling negative or uncomfortable with their playerbase.

mods can choose not to go to anon comms and even make a rule of 'we opt not to take anon comms at their word, so any concerns and requests need to be made via the mod contact/pm', but you still get people that post link after link after link to wg (especially) or rpa threads to try to 'bring it to our attention'. it's frustrating. or when they demand action against a player based on 'this sounds like x, so i want them banned' or something. anon comments are not receipts. no matter how vicious or toxic or hostile or racist or sexist or phobic an anon thread gets, it's my opinion that mods can't and shouldn't act on any of it unless someone slips up and anon fails. ~syntax is bullshit. 'this sounds exactly like so and so' is also bullshit. 99% of times, i've gotten hi ______ when i wasn't ______, and i've seen people called out who i know aren't online/aren't making comments. (or been called out for comments myself that i didn't make but you bet they're 100% positive it was me).

it's frustrating when people demand action based on anon comm conversations, but as a mod, you can't really go off anon comms because they're not always representative of the players in your game. random passersby come in and add in. people looking to stir shit jump in. please come to me as a mod for feedback. use a sock. idc. but i'm not going to make a game-wide decision on some thread on an anon comm. stop linking them. it's frustrating. equally so when you say to the person that linked that you can't use anon comments to base decisions off and you get dragged for being spineless or not caring about your players. you can't win.

sometimes mods are wildly affected by the anon comms. for instance, the traction a game garners in its infancy has a lot to do with 2 things. 1) How big and prolific their own circle of friends are and 2) the initial anon comm reaction to it.

watch the game advertisements thread here some time. if the mods get skewered in the comments of one of their initial ads, no matter how petty the conversation is, you can pretty much guarantee that game is not going to take off. anons turned their nose up at it. it's dead now.

then in the same breath the community will complain about a lack of innovative or diversity in new games.

personally, I think that sort of thing needs anons here to squash that shitty behaviour more than it need the mods to change what they do.

Not sure if this is OP or not, but yeah, CoC is probably not the best word of choice but I do think the intent is clear, for what it's worth!

Yes, though, this exactly. Maybe a "Session 0" approach would benefit some games in their starting phases?
