Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
(Anonymous) 2019-05-19 03:08 am (UTC)(link)apartment rents are climbing around here. it's kind of comforting to know that if something happened that i couldn't rent this space anymore, i own the trailer and could move it somewhere else and that would be easier and less expensive than finding a new apartment- that was a big factor in deciding to do this.
chores and errands: the usual? washing dishes, cleaning the bathroom, the stuff you'd do in a house or apartment. there's a sewer hookup so i don't have to haul the whole trailer out to empty the wastewater tanks, just go outside and pull a valve. i'm renting a big propane tank for heating, the company comes out and fills it when i need it (monthly in winter, hardly ever once the weather warms up). having to go to the laundromat to wash clothes is a downside, i'll admit, and so is having to take super-short showers because of the small hot water tank.
i get regular internet service. the guy did insist on running the cable through a window instead of the trailer's actual cable jack because "trailer wiring doesn't support our speeds" (???) so there's a bit of a draft but i managed to cover that up during the winter, anyway it works
this one was used and around $8k, i got it a year ago and it's still doing just fine. the insurance cost about half as much as the insurance on my car, but iirc one of the questions they asked during the quote was whether i was using it as a stationary residence- it would probably be more if i were towing it around regularly.
i haven't named it... i don't really name any of my stuff
my cat would probably objectRe: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
cool. wasn't sure if you regularly emptied the sewer tank yourself vs sewer hook-up, got gas regularly while traveling, etc. have you considered doing laundry one of these ways: http://www.happypreppers.com/Laundry.html ? if i were to move into cheaper housing, i might do the bucket method. maybe handwash my bras when needed. i have hay fever so i probably wouldn't hang-dry my clothes OUTSIDE, lol. re: short showers, idk if it would help to wash yourself off with a sponge/washcloth first, shave if necessary, and then wash it all off.
hopefully internet isn't too expensive. do your devices pick up wi-fi from other rvs nearby? maybe if you wanted to save money, you could share wi-fi with someone if it's an option.
you've said you can tow it around with your car, what type of rv is it? brand and year is optional, i'm mainly interested in the style. or you could tell me what features it has. it's probably safe to assume it's not the type that can drive itself?
smh i can't believe your cat doesn't want some crazy 20 lb dog pouncing on them and harassing them with squeaky toys a few hours a day. blatant specieism!sorry for all the questions and suggestions, i'm thirsty for the van/rv life so i've done some basic research.
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
(Anonymous) 2019-05-19 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)the propane tank itself is... i forget how much per year to lease? i wanna say around a hundred, and then filling it (~100 gallons) runs between $180-230 depending on the time of year. so i gotta put a little money aside for the winter with that in mind; during the summer I could easily get by for a month or more with the two 7-gallon tanks the trailer came with.
comcast is the only company running internet to this neighborhood so i'm stuck with their monopoly prices, alas.
re: laundry- outdoor clotheslines actually aren't allowed where I live per park regs, so hand-washing more than a couple things at a time would be really impractical. on the bright side the laundromat I go to has wifi and free coffee.
i said i can't tow it around, lol :P my car's a little sedan and the trailer is a 28-footer, I'd probably just end up taking my bumper off if I tried. When we moved it over here, my dad towed it with his SUV.
from when I was looking at trailers to buy, this one is on the bigger end for your regular "travel trailer" style; from around 30' up you're generally looking at a fifth-wheel or a self-propelled motorhome.
the trailer has a slide-out which widens the interior up by a few feet. this is their "rear lounge" model, the floor plan is kind of like this (shitty mspaint drawing ahead): https://i.imgur.com/X22fmSA.png
(not shown: my storage bins, a couple barstools that came with it that I use as little tables. it came with two chairs but one was kind of busted from the previous owner so I hauled it out- getting it through the door was an adventure- and replaced it with the litterbox-hiding cabinet. the cat has a little bed set up on top of that)
it's a 2009 model and pretty well kitted out. it's got an awning (manual, unfortunately. i'm a short girl and opening it by myself is an adventure, but it's worth it in the summer). the kitchen has the basics- sink, gas stove, electric convection oven, fridge/freezer. the fridge can run off electric or propane, so can the water heater. the heater heater is propane only, though, and the thermostat can be a little wonky sometimes
tl;dr: basically a tiny house, i miss having a dishwasher and washing machine but on the scale of modern conveniences i'm a lot more willing to give those up than internet or a shower lmao
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
there are alternative methods to dryers/hang-drying too, if you wanted to look into it. iirc hang-drying in your bathroom or closet = NO BUENO because the humidity would make your stuff smell musty, but my memory might be failing me so google for deets.
i've looked at used trailers/rvs and it seems like a lot of them have tacky af furniture. did yours come with ugly furniture, did it come unfurnished, was the furniture okay?
how does your cat feel about your living arrangement? idk if pretty kitty is a runaway risk or gets fussy about humans or animals outside the windows.
what are your neighbors like?
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 01:06 am (UTC)(link)the furniture is... meh. shades of beige and brown, with a floral print on the couch. it gets the job done, though.
i adopted the cat after I moved in here! he was an outdoor cat to begin with, apparently he belonged to a previous resident who passed away. i've been gradually getting him to spend more time indoors for his own + birds' safety, but he definitely gets stir-crazy if he doesn't get outside occasionally. luckily he doesn't go far- he knows where his turf is.
they're a mixed bag. mostly older people. on the one hand there's the creepy dude who kept leaving me unsolicited gifts on my doorstep and asked if he could call me "sweetie," but on the other hand he's apparently moving out and the rest have been pretty polite. (and they love the cat!)
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
u g h, maybe trailers/rvs get such fugly furniture because it's cheap, idk. i'm still peeved though, lol. there's always furniture covers/just throwing a spare bedsheet on that ugly shit if you need to hide the eye sores ig.
congrats on your adopted son! hopefully your handsome boy doesn't get his ass bit by fleas. idk how common it might be for cats, but my dog has flea allergy dermatitis aka allergy to flea saliva. hopefully mr. kitty is fine. watch out for ticks and other parasites too! also, scratch him in his favorite spots for me, i love cats but developed a bullshit allergy after living the cat fam life for years, fml. did your neighbors remember his name or did you rename him? what special things does mr. kitty have in your trailer? does he have a cat tree? cat nip?
stay safe, anon. i hate creepy dudes who creep on women who live alone. i have a relative who's a single mom leaving in a (stationary) trailer park and she's had multiple unwashed greasy dudes hit on her like they think they're the best option she's got. one or two neighbors, the occasional repair guy... it pisses me (and her) off!
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)he's got his shots and flea/tick drops, he's good. my previous kitty (sweet old girl who passed away last year) had the same kind of flea allergy as your dog. she was an indoor cat but she'd still get itchy spots in the winter because fleas hitch a ride on people's pant legs...
according to the neighbors his name was Oscar, but I didn't know that until I'd already renamed him. I have yet to find a scratcher or post he'll reliably use, but he does love nip.
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
i've owned a dog for so long that my first thought was "RUB DAT BELLY" but then i remembered that cats hate that, lmao. maybe find a cheap but decent back scratcher to use on yourself and also mr. kitty. sometimes i'll use my back scratcher on my dog so i don't have to get up to pet her. or so i don't get loose fur all over my hands. damn shedding winter coat!
maybe you could plant some cat nip in the house to spoil such a handsome boy. or some other cat-friendly plants. maybe plant something that repels fleas/ticks in your "yard" to at least tell those pests to fuck off when he comes back home?
https://fleabites.net/20-plants-that-naturally-repel-fleas-and-other-insects/ i didn't know that nip apparently repels fleas. but if you plant garlic, you might attract my garlic-loving ass while also repeling vampires. i'd put garlic on everything if it wouldn't leak out my pores, fml.

obviously you've gotta plant some where he can't get to them and give him a nip allowance.
tell him that an internet stranger loves him... even though he's a certified Bad Boi(TM) who'd probably rob neighbors of their nip gardens if they had any.
Re: ITT: ANONS INTERESTED IN NON-TRADITIONAL HOMES
(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)He is indeed a certified bad boi. fluffy menace. wakes me up at 4:30 by batting me in the face because he wants breakfast early and keeps lying on the puzzle I'm trying to do. he's lucky he's cute

(Anonymous) 2019-05-20 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)I have a couple of boy cats who fucking love belly rubs
