Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

which means that the PUBLISHER is entitled to either the book or to whatever compensation their contract specified they'd be entitled to if he never produced the book. you and the other readers are not a party to this contract.

by that logic, the chef is only beholden to the restaurant manager or owner, and not the person who ordered the food, and thus the customer has no right to complain, because we don't personally sign their cheque

the chef IS only beholden to the restaurant manager/owner. if a chef kept not making anybody's food, they'd probably get fired, but the customers wouldn't be the ones who got to fire them. the publisher can drop GRRM if they want to, and if he ever started actually losing them money, they would. but he's not, so they won't.

no one here is calling for grrm to be fired.

we're all saying "where's the salad i ordered"

you didn't order a salad.

you ordered a sandwich ten years ago, and you got it.

this is a deeply stupid comment

you realize this argument falls apart when subject to even the barest scrutiny, right?

the reading public was promised another book. we haven't gotten it. we have a right to be upset, regardless if we pay grrm out of our own pockets or not. that's part of capitalism.

like i told the other anon, if you sell a product (ANY product) as part one of seven, then yeah, you are creating a pseudo contract. not a formal one, but it is part of the sale. a service you are promising for the future, so to speak. it is not entitlement to want the head and body of the dinosaur after they sold the arms and legs to you.

writing for public consumption is a service, and while the publisher may be the facilitator in both pay and distribution, the service is executed for the sake of the end-user, the customer, the reader.

it's not entitlement to complain about the quality of that service. with how you read it, we're not even allowed to criticize books we read because we didn't pay the author ourselves.

I mean, everyone's allowed to want whatever they want and feel whatever type of way about it, but what's the goal here? he's either going to write it or he isn't, and all the complaining on earth is unlikely to Inspire him

if you feel that way, then stop calling it entitlement

you're allowed to feel like he owes you the book because of capitalism and unspoken contracts and the fact that you really want it, and I'm allowed to feel like that's called entitlement

if you made a promise that you would do the thing then it's not entitlement

no one is entitled to anything, that's right, but no one's saying legally grrm ought to be chained to his desk and forced to write a book, i'm just making a judgement of him as one human being to another as i would anyone else! i think he's lazy and unmotivated to put the work in to finish, but he also probably enjoys having an audience who loves his writing and therefore he likes to promise that the next book is totally going to be out next year (or the year after...or the year after). he has no followthrough–that doesn't mean he's a terrible human being, it just means that it's annoying when you're a fan of the series and per word of god you keep getting excited about something that keeps not happening

and while i'm certainly not saying that i could be grrm, because of course he's uniquely talented, being a writer at his level is in many ways a pretty cushy gig! yes there's a lot of pressure but in terms of the level of effort and work involved, after eight years with no book i'm pretty sure he's had a lot of free time. it's not an unfair expectation to wonder if he could put in some more work without having to slave away at it day in day out. or at least he could be honest about the work he's putting into it
