Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i feel vaguely ostracized for mentioning smells in my tags. i was taught to try and write with your five senses when building a scene and everyone uses sights and sounds but i rarely ever ever see anyone use smell? no one talks about the smell of rain in the air while staring at a long forgotten cake, or the acrid reek of garbage in the dimly lit city street alley-way while returning to their dumpster home, or sweet musk of their virginal left hand, or oooh that smell the smell of death surrounding you

especially with animal-like characters. this boggles me most of all. guys, it's normal we all smell things. good things bad things, come on talk about it. you make it weird by making it weird.

i describe scents all the time. but I'm also the type that falls asleep while sniffing a perfumed pillow

maybe we are weird

you're fine anon, and excellent evocative choices there.

thing is, look at how many people have enough problems already with the mere act of tagging. either they agonize over their perfect prose for a week and then flake or they have to just shit something out to keep the thread moving. most of us don't have time to remember all five senses, you're lucky to get more than one. it's one of those things that is nice when you see someone do it, but most of the time I'm just hoping the thread fucking moves along and if it takes stripping out all but the most relevant information, so be it.

you're adding raspberry buttercream icing to the cake while most of us are just happy to get dry coffee cake once a day, so kudos.

I LOVE writing about scents. Especially how characters themselves might smell... it really adds to the intimacy of a scene.

I'm extremely smell-averse irl though so idk what my own deal is

I appreciate the examples you're trying here anon but if someone starts waxing rhapsodic about virginal musk or something I'm noping away from that thread. It's really easy to get too purple prosey when you describe scent a lot, and this is coming from someone who played a very scent-sensitive character for years.

(Anonymous) 2019-05-15 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i feel you, i nope out of anyone getting too purple prosey with any sense. but i also seriously can't think of the last time anyone whipped out cerulean orbs spun under thick filaments sweeping across the porcelain expanse of opalescent skin or breasted boobily down the stairs in a tag at me.

i think scent is fine when treated the same as any other sense? just throw in a quick line where appropriate or verb here and there to help set the scene exactly like you would sight or sound

coming from the other side of it, i feel weird for never mentioning smells. i don't have a sense of smell so i'd rather avoid it if possible than risk getting it horribly wrong

da but were you born without a sense of smell or did you lose it at some point?

i'd feel insecure about having body odor and having no idea.

Re: VENTING

jsyk, if you have consistent body odor, you wouldn't know anyway. you rarely can tell your own scent if it's consistent enough. your system gets used to certain smells. it's why people with gross cat litter boxes don't always know they have them as bad as they are if they don't leave the house often. your sense of smell adapts. it's only when you go out/go away for awhile and come back that your nose is like 'oh right, that stinks'. i've known plenty of people that have really bad body odor and they don't seem to notice it and/or can't do much about it. even frequent showers/clothes changing doesn't help with certain people because it's just a pore/sweat thing.

tldr; buck up. you could totally have body odor and still have no idea even with a good sense of smell.

why is this comment so absurdly defensive?
