6 bacons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Mask or Menace

Newish to DW and thinking of applying here. What’s it like? Welcoming to new people? Anything I should know beforehand? What advice for people wanting to fit in?

I've played on and off at MoM for many years so I'll try to help!

MoM is very welcoming to new RPers / new-to-DW RPers, just let us know in your OOC intro! And I would recommend commenting to the most recent Test Drive Meme on [community profile] etcelsior when it goes up before the app round. One of your threads on it can be used as an app sample, too. If you'd like, you can make a Plurk account if you haven't already and add that in an OOC note to the TDM comment saying you're new if you'd like to preemptively make friends and/or get app help. Idk if you're familiar with the app-writing process or not, but it's pretty straightforward at MoM-- they're not too stringent.

The plot is very choose your own pace, which a lot of games say they are but I end up finding is untrue. At MoM, the mods put up metaplot every other month or so, but it's almost always opt-in to directly participate. A lot of major world changes come about as the result of character actions. In between, there's tons of player plots and some slice-of-life. Plot involvement tends to include: action, spying/subterfuge, being a hostage, investigation, playing medic/rescuer, organization/logistics to crisis response... They try to do a wide array. There's also requisite holiday/festival posts, usually as swear-ins (the newbie intro log), with big varieties of activities -- some of them are held in space, for example.

Which brings me to my biggest suggestion: if you play a character suited to SOL, you'll end up playing a lot of it; if you play a mischievous character or a busybody, you'll end up with more action/plotty things to do. (This is just in general. Not to say they can't cross the streams, but it's my experience.) And there's rarely much mod involvement or guidance after the plot is running, so this is not a game where mods will hand you a great role for your character and tell you every step of the way what cool new thing to do. You should feel free to take initiative and be self-motivated and engaged. To me, this is a huge positive, because I prefer the creative freedom, but some people aren't looking for that, so just an FYI.

For picking your ability, I strongly recommend thinking of if there's something you've always wanted to play, or a trope you really enjoy, and making an ability around that. MoM abilities do NOT have to follow some sort of personality-suiting rule and hardly anything is too OP, so go nuts with it. You can also ability update later, so you aren't locked into anything. Creative abilities can seriously generate CR and plot potential. Afterthought ones rarely get used.

I don't think I have any advice for fitting in other than making a plurk, commenting around, and being forthright about what you enjoy RPing so you link up with other people who like the same thing!

you also helped me pick out powers. i thought it had to be related to the character somehow. now i have more ideas!

awww thanks so much, that's great!! I'll look forward to having you in the game!

Yeah, I think people don't take as much advantage of the powers as they could. A lot of people just stick with canon abilities, but there is SOOO much you can do here, especially since you can change them later. E.g., I really like telepathy / soul-bonding plots, so I once gave my character straight up an ability that would force them to happen. (This may or may not out me lmao.)

It also makes MoM extremely viable for "normals" who don't have abilities. Sometimes they have a hard time fitting into plot-heavy games, so games end up forcing everyone to be nerfed or have the same powerset, and that ends up feeling... boring and bland and limiting to me. MoM lets you go wild just like in comics, and fit your character into whatever role you want them to have, not whatever the mods dictate your character should have. (Yes I'm hugely biased.) If you want Vegeta to be a healer instead of a fighter you can just make him have that powerset-- it's pretty comical and liberating as a writer.

I joined MoM within this last year and I really love it! I think you'd also be picking a good time to join. A lot of the stuff people were worried about earlier in the year (burnout from a lot of players, the OOC pages needing to be updated, plot confusion) seems to have gotten better over the past few months (the pace of events slowed, the OOC pages got updated, etc).

I will second what the above anon said about how you'll want to keep SOL/plot in mind with whoever you app. I came in with a character who was 1. interested in the plot and 2. has a strong voice (plus some other stuff that would give me away lol), and that really helped me get into the game quickly in a way I don't think I would have if I was playing someone low-key. Having made connections with other players via that character helped once I apped other, less involved characters too, although I'm sure that's true of any game. Of course, if you want to play SOL, you'll get plenty of SOL! Depends on what about the game interests you.

Other than that the game is pretty welcoming! It's been around so long that the plot seems confusing, but you really don't need to know all that much to understand what's going on. I also agree that player plots are far more common than mod ones, and proactive player actions usually seem to function in the way that events would work in most games, if that's something you'd be interested in.
