So, what if a meme comm was actually an on-going game setting?

Basically, the game would revolve around characters being taken to entertain the "gods" who run the city. (Yes, that again.) Though they're not literal gods. More the self-imposed kind where money=power etc. There would be something of a district system, with the center being for the rich alone, and the outer two rims for everyone else. The whole setting is very much a "them vs us" kind of thing. So no access to the center unless the higher ups want them there. The lower areas would be the general housing/living areas, where characters would stay/live. There's be a middle grounds where they would be able to work to earn the currency of the city and try to buy their freedom.

The gods would also provide monthly events to boost their earnings, but they would all be themed. So one month could be horror, the next sci-fi, the next crack etc. All of it is basically being done to characters to amuse the "gods" while giving characters the chance to earn their freedom.

Characters would also be gain payment for ongoing optional events. From basic things like getting a job, to completing certain tasks. And of course, the money they earn also needs to be used to pay their rent and buy food/clothing/supplies, so there isn't really an easy way out.

Given the way the game would play out, there wouldn't really be room for a metaplot. It'd be very focused on the monthly events, with the possibility of smaller weekly events like the various texting memes (tfln/gen/sexting/etc) taking place each month. Everything is obviously opt-in, with characters "signing up" for each event to earn bonus credits to buy their way out.

IDK, it's just an idea I've been thinking about, so I wanted to see what people though/if there's any real interest.

can i fuck a titan tho?

i like this idea! i like the ease of a meme, but i want the continuity and structure of a game. this combines all of that. it's good.

this would be really fun for me since i can't commit to games and AC and all that, but i miss participating in plots and getting cross canon CR easily

honestly this is everything i could want with my rp climate rn

if you manage to set this up i'd definitely drop my character in, op

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
yes this

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
I think I'd still want to have apps and stuff, just to try and keep problematic people out/make sure the game is a safe space for the players. But that would mean needing an AC to make sure characters aren't being squatted on. IDK, I'm still thinking on the logistics of this cause I know I won't have the time to sink in to modding an actual game alone.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 12:52 pm (UTC)(link)
No!

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
you could also just encourage people to report problem players, and take reports seriously when you do get them? apps alone aren't exactly a foolproof way of keeping nasty people out, esp if they're going to be lax enough that you may as well not bother

if you still want to instate an ac as well as apps it becomes less a meme comm and more a sandbox game tho, ftr. there's enough of a difference in these things that you'll want to specify this clearly in the future if you go forward with that setup, mostly so you don't string along anons like ayrt up there

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
that's also an option. if people are prepared to come forward with problems/proof behind it, then the "worst" can be kept out in the first place. and if shit goes down after they're in, it can be dealt with then.

that said, apps are generally a pretty good way at keeping the worst out, and were my biggest reason for considering them. but i guess just having a claiming system or something works too. idk

technically, the whole thing was a game suggestion rather than a meme comm, which is why i mentioned the plot part in the original post. we already have places like bakerstreet for memes, and i wanted a place with a little more structure/some continuity.

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
um... no. with apps and ac that is a game, not a meme comm.

why not make it a multiverse thing where multiples of characters can exist? then it really doesn't matter if someone is squatting

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 03:09 pm (UTC)(link)
if you don't actually want multiples it's definitely not a meme setup at that point, either way you shake it

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
which is why i posted it as a game and not a meme comm. we already have places like bakerstreet for straight up memes. this idea revolves around there being some continuity and structure behind the setting. not just "random" memes to hit up.

"So, what if a meme comm was actually an on-going game setting?"

idk if it's just me, but the way you framed this line does make it sound like you want to set up a meme comm with a setting that's game-like. might be why some anons are confused

but you actually mean that you're setting up a game with uh...meme-like elements? is that it?

honestly if you were gunning for a sandboxy game all along then foregoing saying anything about memes would probably have been best

nvm about all that interest lol

can confirm as one of the interested anons that this was how i read it too, oops

if it's actually a game then, well, a game's a game and i dont want to take up limited slots anyplace with my shaky rl schedule the way it is. gotta rescind my +1 of interest

sorry for misunderstanding you op!

i may still be interested, but this isn't quite what i was hoping for.

clarifications/more details

(Anonymous) 2018-12-06 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Given some of the responses, I clearly should have worded this differently. What I meant was that the events in game would function similarly to memes. So there'd be the usual suspects like TFLN going on. But there'd also be a "main" event for each month which would be one of the more physical types of memes you see.

So ultimately the main comm would have a weekly meme going up, and a secondary comm would be there for people to play out anything else they want to do. Whether that's random meetups in the city, or sol, or IDK, whatever else they're interested in. Maybe a network comm too so people have that option to play with.

In terms of the technical game aspects of it, apps don't necessarily have to be a thing. Like I've said already, that was more to keep out problematic people. But I've already had a good enough suggestion offered up to fix that. Likewise, AC doesn't have to be one of those MAKE X NUMBER OF COMMENTS kind of things. Maybe just a check in. Maybe a link to a top level on one of the memes (which would ICly work too as the "gods" wouldn't want to keep people there if they weren't participating).

I guess the term sandbox is more appropriate than calling it a game, as, like I originally said, there wouldn't be a real metaplot to uncover. It's very much "you have been abducted for our amusement. earn enough credits to buy your way home." I had to mention memes though because that's kind of the focus for the actual events.

thank you for clarifying! this clears things up, i can see what you're aiming for now. tbh a chill space with some structure like this would still be very nice to have around imo, esp now that other sandboxes like idk starhue and genessia have either fizzled out or are starting to wind down due to lack of mod attention. something loose like this but still with at least a little mod upkeep could help fill those voids!

either way i'd definitely give it a look and a whirl if you decide to go through with it

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 11:00 am (UTC)(link)
with a little more structure, yes

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 01:38 pm (UTC)(link)
with no AC people are going to flake like it has happened with all attempts of games-but-not-really

with ac, you'll have to think a bit more about the premise because games with no plot have no luck these days

sorry to sound like a pessimistic asshole but variations of this has been tried many times and i'd hate to see you lose your time. people were crying they wanted games like gargleblasted back and it barely lasted a month when they tried

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, that's why i brought the idea here to get some other people's input. there's pros and cons for having a full game structure with ac/apps/etc, and it could honestly work both ways.

personally, i prefer the structure of a game, simply because it means it's easier to control who gets in. but that's largely because i've had to deal with a lot of...less than savory people on public rp comms before. putting in a strong reporting system could help curtail that i suppose.

there is a basic premise re: the "gods" and buying your way out. but it's something that could be expanded on. i just wouldn't want to detract from the ongoing events by throwing a heavy metaplot in to the mix. the whole thing is meant as a light-hearted game with a bunch of meme like "events".

ayrt

(Anonymous) 2018-12-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, i did get what the premise was. but games that are only "wacky effect events" don't work like they used to back in lj, which is why i brought up the gargleblasted example. you mentioned memes so maybe i'm reading this wrong, but if your events have a bit more of thought into them than just random effect then it can work
