yeah like, crisis core was the least offensive of those three largely because of nomura and kitase's oversight, but 3rd Birthday and Type-0 were fucking horrid and, lmao, no wonder the party in XV was all dudes, I wouldn't trust this guy to handle a female character ever fucking again, we should consider the cancelling of lunafreya's episode a blessing in disguise.

tabata didn't create final fantasy xv and its all male cast. he just finished in 2 years what nomura couldn't when he started this ten years ago.

other than some character designs and assets, the game we got is very different from the game nomura started, and that's all on tabata.

i'm not trying to say nomura's would have been better, we ultimately will never know, but don't pull that tired excuse. the majority of the game's story and direction was completed under tabata.

to be fair to tabata, both type-0 and ffxv were projects that were handed to him after being stuck in development hell. while he did essentially start with a brand new story for all of them, there were essentially expectations of how the story should be thanks to SE continuously teasing the game. he basicallly had to tie in all these characters and world together in a story that felt integrated and alive.

i don’t think his work is bad but i do feel like he was starting to turn into the guy square would push off their messes to fix. crisis core is the only one that he had control of from start to finish iirc.

then explain 3rd Birthday

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
i’ve never played it and i don’t have any interest in parasite eve so i can’t explain anything about it

but people either seem to like it or hate it from what i’ve seen, there’s no in between.

the metacritic value seems to reflect that, but most of the post-mortem on 3rd Birthday has to do with the treatment of its female lead, and the end-game reveal. even people who never played the originals have had less than kind things to say about it.

the point seems to be more that tabata has a record of treating female characters poorly, or thoughtlessly. that's why it's probably for the best he didn't get to make either of the character episodes focusing on them.

i was just responding to the "no wonder the party was all dudes" comment. i'm not going to say the story we got is a masterpiece, it's definitely not, but let's be fair with what failures we should attribute to tabata and which ones we shouldn't.

my perspective is this: final fantasy xv was a rushed and unfinished game. i bought it on release and was disappointed with certain directional choices (which is 100% on tabata). however, the game was a commercial success and there was no need to expand on it further (from a business standpoint). they got our money and could have moved on, but instead they kept creating new content. i'm not going to complain about that.

this part isn't so much in response to you now, but i roll my eyes every time someone whines about having to pay for this extra new content. they have a whole staff of writers and programmers working on these extra things, of course they're going to charge for it so they can actually pay the people who are making them.

as far as i remember, the only characters who existed from the original nomura build of the game who were kept were Noctis and Lunafreya. characters in the original party from the early test shots eventually became the rest of the four man band, but there were women in that shot, too. it's possible those female characters from that initial group shot were never going to be in the final party (one of them almost certainly became iris later on) but the four man band was still a decision that can be attributed to tabata.

the game was a commercial success and there was no need to expand on it further (from a business standpoint)

ffxv was a loss, and no amount of sales it would have had would have recouped the bloated development and marketing budget that came from its absurd development cycle. now this is decidedly not tabata's fault, his job was to get the project finished since by that point it was already over budget and impossibly delayed, but it absolutely was imperative to square to continue monetizing the game even after the initial release or it never would have recouped their loss on it. for the record, despite all the monetization, it still didn't. see also; tomb raider.

square posted 30+ million dollar loss, recently, if you want to know just how badly they needed to continue monetizing ffxv.

DA here- the loss iirc was basically all on studio luminous, which they just set up and haven’t produced anything yet. by canceling the dlc (and apparently the triple A project tabata was starting on) they wrote off all the work, assets, and production for the DLC as a loss of 30 million yen (about $25m in US dollars) in speculative earnings.

Do people think Nomura writes all of Square Enix's games or what? Look at the gd credits you ignorant shits.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
anon, ffxv started as nomura's project. this isn't people speculating based on his role in the company, it's an established objective fact that he was the one that started the game, from back when it was versus-xiii to when it morphed into xv.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 07:54 am (UTC)(link)
you sweet summer child

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 08:55 am (UTC)(link)
ffxv was nomura's project; it was supposed to be a side-story to ffxiii. dude has add. he starts something then goes on to work something else, rinse repeat. look at kingdom hearts 3 and recently, ff7 remake. (woff, dissidia nt, dissidia oo, and a shit ton of other projects)

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
He isn't the only one who has a say in it and is working on it. It's like giving a movie director all the credit.

(Anonymous) 2018-11-11 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
okay that's

not what people are discussing. it's a fact that nomura was the director for ffxv before tabata came on. therefore there is some confusion, at times, how much of the game's creative direction was nomura's direction or tabata's.

no one is saying he made the whole fucking game, you mental midget.
