Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

is this a fgo thing

i guess we'd gone too long without a culturally insensitive faux pas from them

it's the new servant, sitonai, who is a pseudo-servant bound to illya. she showed up in the last lostbelt story chapter, but wasn't summon-able until now. sitonai is a figure from ainu mythology, hence the clothing. she also apparently has elements of louji and freyja from scandinavian mythology, but that just sounds like something that was in the lostbelt chapter, since nothing in her playable form references that as far as i can tell.

as far as being culturally insensitive, idk. i haven't seen anyone more knowledgeable on ainu culture speaking out against it. with pseudo-servants, you're not really getting a representation of the original myth most of the time anyways, just the aesthetic trappings of them (see also; ishtar, parvati, muramasa, zhuge liang, etc).

personal opinion, i don't think her design is any worse than the ainu sisters from the samurai shodown games (nakoruru and rimururu) and those were historically positively received by the ainu, as far as i've read about it.

It's not really culturally insensitive, though.

Sitonai is a very obscure Ainu figure, just the fact that she's being referenced shows they did a lot of research. Ilya's powers and abilities are closely tied to Sitonai's story, too. Her clothing's historically accurate, as are her weapons. The only real issue is the fact that it isn't technically fully Sitonai, but it isn't really like Waver/Zhuge where Zhuge basically doesn't exist in the equation, Ilyasviel talks about Sitonai as if she's having a conversation with her inside herself, and her third ascension is more Sitonai than Ilyasviel.

It'd be cool if they put a full ainu figure in, mind, and I can get criticism from that angle, but there's a walk between that and 'culturally insensitive.'

Her clothing's historically accurate

gonna preface this that i agree that it's not exactly culturally insensitive, but this statement isn't wholly true. someone on twitter put this better, but sitonai's outfit isn't really accurate, particularly in the color choice. it's more in line with like an anon mentioned above with the ainu sisters in smasho. very anime, sort of playing very fast and loose with ainu aesthetic but not really concerned for accuracy.

you can generally find more accurate representations of ainu dress in shows like golden kamuy and, ironically, utawarerumono.

BUT this isn't to say sitonai's design is bad or offensive! it's super fucking cute and i love it to death, and there's been positive reception on japanese twitter from ainu-descended fans, too.
