Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

exactly. TAZ is born from griffin's imagination, not from a forgotten realms guidebook. it's not set in the FR world in any way that would matter to this game enough to put a blanket ban on all d&d OCs.

why can't people just take no for an answer

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
because the rule is dumb and illogical.

why base your game on a d&d campaign and then shut down attempts at bringing d&d characters in?

hi pelly/mr_buttons, you're way too obvious to be anon

Re: da

just so everyone in this thread knows, there are multiple anons posting who think this is dumb, not just one person, since no one on anoncomms seem capable of considering that multiple people might have the same issue

i think the rule's pretty logical, you just seem really hung up on being told no

the appeal of the game for me is being able to take my canon character and throw them into d&d mechanics for fun. i don't think i'd want to be in a game with 49 other tabletop oc's

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
exactly this. if this game allowed tabletop oc's, then I wouldn't even bother apping. everybody's got their own sparkle elf d&d oc and none of them are as interesting as people think they are.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
i just wish i could escape the taakos and lups who all think they're hilarious and amazing but can't possibly pull off the jokes well.

this game appeals a lot to d&d ocs and it would've been flooded with them.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 02:06 am (UTC)(link)
anon, be real, even if they were allowed they would not "flood" the game. way more people in DWRP *don't* play any tabletop, much less import their characters to DWRP, than do.

that's no reason to disallow them.

yeah, this is the issue. This would be the perfect game for tabletop OCs, and FR isn't the only D&D setting out there, there's Ravenloft, Eberron, Planescape, Greyhawk, Spelljammer, etc. etc.

And as said, TAZ barely resembles FR as is, and it just seems kind of hypocritical?

The thing for me is that, reading through these explanations on the plurk and FAQ, my kneejerk reaction is that these people know nothing about D&D beyond surface details.

i know who the head mod is, and you're incredibly wrong about that

Re: dda

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
that just makes the rule seem even more stupid

jesus christ their clarification doesn't make it any better.

if the original intention was to keep other FR-based characters from fucking up the premise of your game, why are you banning *all* tabletop characters from established campaign settings?

this makes zero sense whatsoever, especially since most games that allow normal OCs (and this game does) don't qualify tabletop characters as fandom OCs at all.

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
there were two problems going on here.

1) people were asking why a game that would so obviously appeal to d&d characters wasn't allowing d&d characters specifically

2) people were trying to figure out what does and does not count as a fandom oc

the mods don't want to deal with d&d characters for a specific reason, but also don't want fandom ocs at the game in general.

it makes sense to me?

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
they're just fine with critrole characters though, which are also dnd characters

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
the difference between a character from critrole and your personal d&d character is a critrole character has an established canon story that is publicly published for all to see. a personal tabletop oc does not.

critrole characters also don't have any connection to the setting taz borrows from.

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
neither would an oc from a different setting like Eberron, or another company like White Wolf/Onyx Path.

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
yes, and ocs like that are not allowed either.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
the issue is they don't want fandom ocs at all. it's just that people were asking why there is no exception for d&d and they received an answer.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't have a horse in this race, but I always thought the issue with fandom OCs was the inevitable "oh, I totally know canon character!" thing. I didn't know we were counting tabletop characters as fandom OCs now. It seems like the term has shifted when I wasn't looking.

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
yea, I wouldn't call tabletop OCs 'fandom OCs', to me there's a distinct difference.

Re: sa

(Anonymous) 2018-10-26 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
then why allow OCs at all?
