Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

something i've been curious about for awhile since i don't get around much in dwrp: what are some reasons you tag other versions of the same character if you have a friend who plays that character?

i assume some reasons include just being thirsty for that character regardless of interpretation, or maybe you know a player who happens to play the same character, but do you have any other particular reasons? are you just too nice to say your friend sucks, or is it never anything deep?

it's never anything deep. usually it's just the novelty factor of seeing a familiar character, since most of my rp friends and i play from semi-obscure canons so running into one of their muses is like encountering a unicorn in the wild.

what

literally what

anon, it's not that deep. the absolute vast majority of us just tag a character because we like the character, we don't give a shit if it's our friend or some stranger playing them. this is such a weird thing to get hung up on

long ago, i was defeated in single combat by the moderator of a slayers geocities page, and the fragments of my soul were scattered to the wind. i now travel the world, undying, searching for the canonmates that contain the fragments of my power.

sometimes I just want to thread an interaction and other players of the same character may take it a different direction, sometimes my friend who plays them aren't around to tag

there is one specific character a friend plays that, while they're okay, aren't into playing my favorite ship while others are. so yeah sometimes I'm just that thirsty

(Anonymous) 2018-10-23 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
i do it because i want to do more things with that character and the friend i already play with is usually busy so getting someone else to play with (while still playing with my friend) allows me to get the most fun.

that's all there really is to it.

i get burgers from different restaurants when i'm in the mood for different burgers

it's not deep but that said if I find a writer who plays a character I like, I'll only hit up someone else playing that character if say, my friend basically drops the character

I've run into a fair amount of people whose interpretations or writing styles I don't agree with, so if I find someone I like, I prefer to tag with them. I like keeping cr continuity. there is something to be said about exploring around other people with the same muses, but once I like a particular writer's muse, I don't feel interested in hitting up someone else with that muse

because i'm a thirsty ho who enjoys playing multiple scenarios with a certain pairing, and don't want to hog all of my friends' time playing with them and giving them burnout. it has nothing to do with any of the people who play that character.

i also find it fun to bounce off different interpretations of characters who aren't as defined as others in canon. i don't think i've ever judged one interpretation as better than another, they're all just different and fun in different ways.

1) my friend is perfect but also physically incapable of delivering the sheer amount of threads needed to quench my thirst, as most humans would be

2) i literally do not care who is playing the character. if it's not an interpretation i completely disagree with, i'll tag them happily without ever finding out if need be

why would you assume that an rp partner playing with other people besides you means they secretly think you suck? do you get the same way if they play with different characters or thread a different ship out with someone else?

if i thread a ship with someone, we ain't married, i can thread with other people who play the same character if i feel like it and they can thread with other people who play my character too and nobody cares

if this kind of thing bothers you then you're blurring the ic/ooc divide and need to work on your insecurity and inappropriate possessiveness

the amount of assumptions in this reply is pretty impressive, vastly exceeding some of the other replies in this thread.

my friends were complaining about people playing with alternate versions of their character (in a gen sense ironically, had nothing to do with shipping) in a plurk. i only play with them/their versions of the characters because as i said i don't get around much in dwrp, so i didn't have a horse in the race.

obviously i can't ask my friends about this, so i posed the question to you guys. i didn't mention my friends in op because i don't want to get advice on whether i should/shouldn't keep them as rp partners or derails, i just wanted opinions on the topic at hand.

i appreciate the replies i did get that did answer my question. my question wasn't any deeper than y'all tagging other versions of the same character.

I've had too many people drop on me in the past so I tend to try to spread my 'eggs' through as many baskets as possible so that I'll have at least one or two consistent writers. The more I like a character or a dynamic, the more of them I'll shoot for in the hopes of keeping that fire going as long as I can. Nothing deep about it and honestly nothing about one person being bad and me just not wanting to tell them. Too many flakes, thirst is too real. Romantic or non

My friend is the best at playing this character, but she hasn't played him in ages and doesn't have the energy for him anymore, so it's either sitting here and pining forever for him, or finally branching out.

My now very tiny circle of rp friends after ages away from dwrp barely play anymore or are involved in new fandoms.

Time for me to branch out!

And hey, even when someone still plays, why not play with other versions if they're good or at least interesting and the player doesn't hate me/my character?
