rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

It seems like there's no agreement over what constitutes an AU game these days. All of the following are apparently "AU":

Characters are totally rewritten as natives of the game setting.
Characters have false memories of living in the game setting, but gradually regain their canon memories.
Characters visit different universes and have to blend in as if they were natives, but their canon memories aren't affected.
Characters arrive in the game world with their memories intact but are physically changed to match the game setting (e.g. gain wings, shrunk to tiny size, etc.)
Characters arrive in the game world with their memories intact but are physically/mentally corrupted by the setting.
Players can choose to have their character's personality altered in the game world (like the sluttification brainwashing in Duplicity).

Personally, I'd only consider the first one to be a traditional AU, and we haven't had many of those.

the first one is the only one that's actually an au. the second one is close and lets you play with similar things, but still keeps the canon connection. the others are just not aus at all.

the only true au game i can think of in recent memory is i think people could app their characters as setting-native aus in faderift?

I'd also consider the first one to be a traditional AU. yeah you've got things like recolle where characters have different backstories, but if you're regaining canon memories then it's not an AU.
