so, okay, disclaimer that this does have a sequel the first book stands alone just fine, but i love The Wall and The Wing by Laura Ruby. it's modern earth nyc with the twist being that basically everyone can fly, with varying degrees of being able to fly well. the protagonist is an orphan girl named "gurl" who can't fly but does find out she can turn invisible. from there it's a lot of subplots tying into each other in really fun ways, and the world is super charming; it's a very light read but it's well paced and super enjoyable
