Stand alone YA novels that are
- either with a female protagonist and in some kind of earth with a fantasy twist (there's magic, there's vampires, etc.)
- or a period drama

most of the fantasy-ish female protag series I've run into are series and I just don't want to commit to something that's 3 or more books. (period dramas just b/c I love period dramas)

sunshine, by robin mckinley! it's an urban fantasy girl-runs-into-vampires story set in a world where pretty much all supernatural creatures and magic is real and exists among humans, and people are living in the aftermath of a big old supernatural war. it's fun, has imo a entertaining first person stream-of-consciousness style of writing that's rarely done well. the mc is a baker who works for a family restaurant, and all the talk about food makes me hungry too

try vivian vande velde's books maybe? Dragon's Bait springs to mind immediately. It's aimed at a YA audience and is a short quick read but I'm very fond of it.

if you'd be open to picking up books that CAN be read as standalone pieces but are part of a series, I recommend So You Want To Be A Wizard by Diane Duane. the stories continue after the first book, but it's a complete adventure in itself and can be read and enjoyed alone.

so, okay, disclaimer that this does have a sequel the first book stands alone just fine, but i love The Wall and The Wing by Laura Ruby. it's modern earth nyc with the twist being that basically everyone can fly, with varying degrees of being able to fly well. the protagonist is an orphan girl named "gurl" who can't fly but does find out she can turn invisible. from there it's a lot of subplots tying into each other in really fun ways, and the world is super charming; it's a very light read but it's well paced and super enjoyable

It's a little over your limit at 4 books, but it's got everything you're asking for so I'm going to put it here in case you want to try it out. (The series is finished, by the way, so you wouldn't have to wait for more to come out.)

'The Finishing School' series by Gail Carriger is pretty great. It has a female protagonist (and most of the supporting cast is female, actually). It's set at a boarding school in the mid-1800s in a world that is mostly like ours, but it has some steampunk elements. And lost of supernatural stuff, there's vampires and werewolves and ghosts and stuff.

The main girl, Sophronia, is sent to a 'finishing school', which in that time period was sort of like a high school for girls. Well, normally that's what it would have been. This 'finishing school' she got sent to takes the term quite literally, and along with all the other usual subjects they also teach the girls how to 'finish' anything and anyone. Yep, it's basically a school for teaching Victorian-era teenage girls how to be spies and assassins. And she also has to deal with vampires and werewolves (one of her friends is a member of a werewolf clan, and the vampires are always up to something), so the supernatural element is definitely present.

As a note, the author has written two other book series that take place in this same world, but this one is the first chronologically (It takes place about 20 years before one of the other series, and about 40 years before the other one) and you don't have to read the other two series to enjoy this one. The other two aren't YA either, so yeah.

It's been a while since I've gotten into an anime or manga. Rec me an anime or manga with the following:

-horror or crime genre (i'm fine with lots of gore or outright guro too)
-adult main characters (a few teenage/child characters are fine but I'd prefer that the main focus not be on teenagers/kids)
-not overly focused on powers/attacks/abilities...I'm totally fine with supernatural/sci-fi elements but I'd prefer it not be focused on power-based combat/powering up and gaining new abilities to beat the baddie/etc.
-awesome villains are a definite plus

Some examples of stuff I've liked in the past: monster, anything junji ito, parasyte, hellsing

check out Akumetsu. the main character is a teenager and some of the storylines involve his classmates, but most of the characters are adults well out of their teens. extreme amounts of gore, sci-fi elements but no shounen powerup stuff, very heavy on the political commentary.

psycho-pass perhaps? it's about a bunch of adults fighting crime in a rather dystopian future and it has a pretty interesting villain, though ymmv on the ending. that's in regards to the first season anyway; there's another season and a movie, but i found the second season disappointing and never got around to watching the movie. but s1 at least is pretty solid and can stand on its own, and i think you might like it!

please, please fucking read jiraishin

it's a 90's era crime noir manga with gorgeous art by tsutomu takahashi all about that good old trope of the hard boiled detective cop who does unconventional and probably illegal stuff to put the bad guys away. the mc is a SUPER hardcore ruthless and an interesting and fucked up guy who deals with interesting and fucked up crimes-- not just your standard "who killed X today?." while there's some stuff that takes a sliiiightly spooky/powers? oriented bent, it's mostly set in a modern, realistic world.

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

The movies are great too, but the series is really great.

Late but try Yuureitou or Ajin. Yuureitou goes hard into LGBTQ+ elements if that's something you're interested in for character profiles. It starts off with different crimes including horror elements then into a torture/death maze arc then back into crime+horror.
Ajin has immortals but it's not really about how powerful someone can get through training but rather how immortality is used creatively for tactical diversions in gun fights against military units. Sato is also the best villain ever because he's too good at what he does.

See if you can dig up The 10th Kingdom. It's a TV miniseries from 2000 about a waitress from New York who finds her way into the fairytale world. It's pretty dorky, but charming at the same time.

You might enjoy Juuni Kokuki (12 Kingdoms) which is available in 1) hilariously 90s anime flavor or 2) forever incomplete novel format. It's a series about a fantasy land (connected to our own) where the titular 12 kingdoms are ruled by their own rulers and a 'kirin,' which chooses said ruler and crowns them by divine right. As long as the ruler doesn't defy heaven's rules, the kingdom will prosper, but if the ruler fucks up, the kirin and the kingdom both suffer for it.

The anime is heavily centered around one of the protagonists from the novels, a high school girl who turns out to be the ~chosen~ ruler for a kingdom who's recently lost its last one. Being dragged over into fantasy Chinese kingdom is not her idea of a good time, and there's politics, bullshit, things to get used to, etc. The show introduces some characters that don't exist in the novels, and I think it does a pretty okay job, but there's definitely more depth to sidecharacters + world building in the books that I love.

podcast, audio book or even a radio play style thing. I work in a warehouse and I'm sick of listening the crappy radio we have in the background.

I tried welcome to nightvale but the audio quality annoys the shit out of me. Crit roll is also not my thing.
