We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

let's look at the picture prompt memes as an example.

if you go into the smut one, you're going to see nsfw stuff. if you go into the shipping one, you're, hopefully, less likely to see it.

shipping doesn't automatically equal smut or nsfw content, which is important when and if people are rping around underage people or family or w/e. sometimes it's because the chars are underage and they just want fluffy schmoop shipping. sometimes it's because the players aren't comfortable with graphic smut (think the ftb types). so those types of people will enjoy shipping, but will back the fuck out of any smut memes or not go in them. most smut players don't give a shit and will play all over the fuck. gen only players won't go in either.

so because there is a level of nsfwness in the concept of it, it makes it three different categories. gen (which, btw, isn't always nsfw, but it's just nsfw in the context of porn), shipping (which can be fluffy, schmoopy, kids in puppy love or shy glances), or smut (which is what it says on the tin. you're in their for tits and ass and dick and balls). yes, you can mix and match them, but they are, for the purpose of people playing in them, three separate categories.

I mentioned it above, but we've gotten pretty off topic. The reason we're talking about ship/smut in this thread is because bakerstreet has more of these as opposed to gen memes. So for the purposes of this thread we're talking about them as non-gen memes due to the goal of the thread.

In addition, ship/smut memes are more likely to have overlapping audiences with each other than with gen, so in terms of organizing and running a community, it makes much more sense to treat them as a unit. Technically we already have a smut comm (TLH), so anyone who cares about the distinction will be looking there more often than BS.

no, anon. 'we' are not. you are. the rest of the comm is capable of actually treating things as they are. you don't get to relabel because it doesn't suit your narrative.

the comm suggested will 'allow' relationship memes (ship, btw, in case you didn't know it), so if they'll allow that and not smut, then there is a clear definition between the two, and lumping them together when doing a count to prove how skewed the numbers are is not okay.

especially when what the fuck did you expect? you might not count it as 3 categories, but the actual comm does. so it's evenly distributed. you're not making a point. you're trying to start an argument over semantics and you've got them wrong. 'wah, this comm that caters to everything is evenly ratioed between them and there's the same amount of gen as there is everything else. i feel like gen is getting flooded out, even though it's pretty evenly portrayed. wah'.

I literally don't even know where you got half the points you're trying to read into my post, so I'll just bow out here. Enjoy the rest of your Monday, anon.

holy shit, could your head be any further up your own smug asshole?

(Anonymous) 2017-04-10 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That was genuine confusion, not smugness. You seem really, really determined to shout me down, and as far as I can tell are not interested in anything I'm trying to explain. It's better that we both save our time and breath.

from the words you typed, genius. 'for the purpose of this thread, WE'RE talking about-'. no. you are. 'we' are not. you do not speak for the people. you are not the rock.

in terms of organizing a community, it makes sense to have the three categories be separate, regardless of overlap. otherwise what you're doing is getting into subcategories, like horror, h/f, angst, au. there will always be overlap. rare is the person that sticks to one singular category. i play in all three. what now? does my opinion not count because i can't commit? lots of people play in all three. that doesn't make there suddenly be less than three categories that have been three separate categories since before you came along and tried to reinvent math.

there's a difference between being the same and being connected.

(Anonymous) 2017-04-10 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, and gen and shipping can be the same if the shipping is gen. oh. look at that. darn. i can do it too.

gen doesn't mean eunuch. it means 'general', which technically can cover a variety of things. shipping and smut came along as categories afterward because of things like 'the random meme' being followed by 'the smutty random meme'. like, wtf do you think gen means? asexual? agender? genderless? it was the catch all which can and used to include shippy and smutty stuff until the need for nsfw boundaries came along..

which, btw, can apply to 'gen' stuff. h/c. torture. drugs. there's more to nsfw than boobies. and all that fits into gen.

except isn't the point of gen to be something other than trying to hook up, either romantically, sexually or both?
