We mustn't offend the all powerful NPCs!

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. I'd like a character that plays nice and can be social and friendly but is secretly a jackass, either to the point of just being rude or outright capable of violent betrayal. Doesn't matter if they're male or female.

izaya from drrr!! i think the fandom reputation has somewhat died down, so if you want a character who can 'play nice' well canonly but is in fact a sociopathic asshole, he's a good choice.

gimme all your narcissists, especially if they're characters who are more focused on the 'man I'm so beautiful' or 'hot damn do I look amazing' physical aspects of narcissism instead of thinking they're the most powerful/most important/etc.

Yumichika Ayasegawa from Bleach is big on gloating about his looks, and is otherwise more interested in being acceptable than being admired.

Reaver from Fable got his start as a villain when he made a pact with evil spirits for eternal youth and beauty at the cost of the lives of his whole town and the occasional sacrifice of someone else's youth. When it comes to everything but his looks, he's more smug and purely selfish than he is openly arrogant.

the classic: Vega from Street Fighter.

more esoteric but still fun: Yuya Fungami from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable

dennis from it's always sunny in philadelphia. classic narcissism often turned to 11 for the comedy factor. also a sociopath.

Looking for a TV show that's short enough to blast through and maybe pick up a character from--3 to 5 seasons, maybe. I like action of any genre and time period with some amount of overarching plot. Some of my favorite recent shows are Criminal Minds and Archer. Would love it if the main cast doesn't include insufferable smartasses that are never ever punished for their behavior (i.e. Archer is full of jackasses but they all get punched in the face at some point). I'm willing to try out a series someone might be craving a castmate for, btw.

Fringe: The characters, like Walter, have done some dumb shit in their lives and it comes back to bite them in the ass pretty frequently. Also has very interesting and rich characters and went out on its own with an end story and not a lingering maybe what happened.

Breaking Bad: ... Gold. And so much payback.

Santa Clarita Diet: Maybe it's my love of Drew Barrymore showing, but that show is so dumb and stupid, yet fun. One season so far.

Lucifer: The Devil and the Detective. It's a lot more tongue in cheek and it's still going and finishing up S2, but also a fun watch.

Any Marvel Netflix show except for Iron Fist, which I'm so very disappointed in. DareDevil was great, and JJ and Luke Cage have some great moments. Makes me really psyched for Defenders and allows me to gloss over Iron Fist.

+1 to DareDevil.

Lots of good action scenes that aren't shaky cam (especially season 2 with lots of fighting) and the show can be addicting really fast.

Thanks! I loved S1 of Daredevil and enjoyed S2 less but still found it pretty good. How to Jessica Jones and Luke Cage compare quality and tone-wise?

I'll try and check out the other series too. :)

I feel you on S2 of DD, which I found the Elektra angle to have been why I was turned off it so much. Black Sky what?

Spoilers for those who haven't seen it:

Luke Cage has that vibe through it of 70s blaxploitation and Shaft-ness. It takes a few mocking shots at itself, like with a nod to Luke's comic outfit, but I particularly liked it for the way it opened up Claire's character arc a bit more. Something Netflix Marvel has done that I've really enjoyed is that ability to make their villains multidimensional. They're not bad to be bad. They have a lot of depth and pain and fucked up pasts of their own that pushed them down that path a bit and you can sort of empathize. It makes them feel richer, imo.

Jessica Jones is a ymmv series. I personally liked it, but it does deal incredibly deeply with rape, abuse, drug/alcohol abuse, and darker elements that I feel DD sort of scraped against. Which, to be fair, with a character like Jessica Jones, is inevitable. Kilgrave is a huge part of her story arc and I've mentioned this in another discussion about this, but I'd prefer that they deal with it first so we can move on from it and she can grow on her own and develop as a character than to have Kilgrave's rapiness drag on for three or four seasons. He's dead. It's done. S2, if they have a S2 of JJ and don't just stick with the Defenders for all the rest of them, can move past that part of her canon. And even with that terrible stain on it, I still liked S1. He was one of the few villains that was just terrible to be terrible, and I'm glad the fucker died. Gave me some satisfaction, which I think is sort of a private nod from the female writing cast to its female audience. A little 'we can't do this for you in real life, but we can take out one big bad for you by proxy'. I appreciated it.

Tone-wise, I'd say both of them can lean pretty dark, but they also have that Marvel charm to make it so you still tune in day after day because hey, there's light around the corner and the characters suck you right in.

Except for Iron Fist. Fuck that series.

black sails

there are jackasses, but they do tend to get shit on a lot, it's got plenty of action, being a pirate show, and it's only 4 seasons long, with the last episode airing just this last week so you don't have to worry about it being another season longer by the time you caught up.

Person of Interest, Leverage, Warehouse 13 for the first three seasons more or less.

+1

Would (ironically) kill several men for more Person of Interest or Leverage players. POI's a heartbreaker in S5, though, if you get into it.

justified

smartass cowboy cop type MC, but there are consequences to everything he does, sometimes even seasons later.

a long time ago on rpanons i remember seeing someone describe an anime as "black lagoon but actually good" and being interested in it. now for the life of me i can't remember what show that was called.

space romp! bandits or cowboys or idk man just some reasonably light hearted space based action. zero points for cowboy bebop or firefly, I've seen both. space dandy is on the list, but if you want to put in a good (or bad) word for it I'd appreciate the opinions.

Stargate series is an old favorite, but early seasons may not have aged well? Atlantis is more space romp-y, imo, and I started with it before going back to SG:1, so you don't NEED the background seasons to get it. 75% lighthearted, 25% serious, ideal ratio! Stargate Universe was a different tone, though, more serious, I guess? Still good, probably just not what you're looking for.

(And The Expanse isn't lighthearted at all, but it's freaking GOOD. Just if you wanted some space adventures that are a little more bleak.)
