- More games with active networks, I'm okay with logs but I don't like the switch to IC inboxes because I feel like it decreases the amount of interacting between different groups in the game. I'm fine with them being used for stuff that would otherwise be a filtered network post or whatever.
- Games with morally bankrupt or ambiguous premises. I feel like 90% of all games veer away from any interesting moral conflict to appeal to the widest playerbase, which waters down a lot of plots.
- More nonhumans in RP, I'm guilty of playing too many humans myself but there's nothing I enjoy more than engaging nonhuman characters. Bonus points if they're completely nonhumanoid. Walking trees, living furniture, flying cars, giant jellyfish, you name it.
- Fanmade AUs branching off of or based on canon, these are some of my favorites to mess around with and I don't see much of them around anymore.

i don't know about the nonhumans thing, more of them sounds fun in concept but some people don't know how to play it off without overusing the novelty. for example, in one game i was in, let's say this character was an electric specter (for the sake of anonymity) that corrupted video feeds whenever they tried to use the camera, but audio and text worked fine. this person always had their character respond in video no matter the post content whether it was a slice of life prompt or distress beacon solely to go [tee hee the video is all static!] instead of going audio or text. it didn't seem IC either, because the character wasn't forgetful or a troll.

Or on the other side, people who don't know how to respond to your nonhuman character other than to remark on them being nonhuman. I was playing an alien once and went through so many threads that were literally just "what are you" and my character having to explain their species all over again. It gets boring really fast.

What is your solution then? You seem to be putting blame on others with "people don't know how to respond to nonhuman characters other than..."

Basically you're asking other players' characters to be OOC if they can't be surprised when come across a creature that doesn't exist in their world.

downplaying the shock or handwaving past the exposition of what the character is isn't too much to ask for. if it's a little ooc for a character not to freak out and ask minimal questions, it's not that big of a deal either.

goddamn I would love to see more people open to playing with fan AUs. :(

I have all sorts of AUs from PSLs with my main partner/conversations with fandom friends and I'd love to mess around with them with other people. Or self-indulgent crap like "AU based on this fic I love!"

but even when it's just for some goofy fun I feel like there's such a stigma against AUs in DWRP that I never try.

I love playing nonhumans and exploring all their little day to day oddities that don't come up in canon.

My main is inhuman, and I love getting to explore how differently he interacts with the world around him because of how he's formed.
