I'd say to send a PM. I've been doing that a lot lately, and it really helps. Double check if there's anything you can do on your end, like giving them more to work with or changing something if it's not interesting. Even if it's outside of your control, (we don't really know what's going on in someone else's life, after all) at least it shows them that you're still interested in continuing.

I'll rephrase that, then. Shoutouts to the cast members people give a shit about and want to play with.

to give this dumb thing context, era apped cassian andor from star wars and proceeded to be wildly ooc with everything she did. one of her first things was to have him approach yuuri and victor, who he knew were ice skaters mind you, and groom them to be his little spy army. it made no sense whatsoever. then the two nonexistent ones apped, the little army that couldn't seemed set to grow larger, and era dropped in a tantrum due to reasons that have been hashed and rehashed all over the last rpa and wg posts.

This is Eleanor from Tales of Berseria. She's part of the nun police, and is very serious about things but also believes in people and the good in people and she just wants to make a positive change. The writing in the game was really good, and I really loved her character, so I picked her up for RP.

I'm really excited, because she made it into Melodies of Life for endgame! I've had a few characters there before, but they've all been on the lazier side of things, and none of them have really cared about saving the world all that much. It's a nice change of pace to have a character who's proactive about being a hero of light and all the things the plot is about.

I've know about spin, but I never stopped to consider they would be low impact! I suffer from chronic back and ankle pain. Working out is hard for me but I really want to get in shape. II know of at least one spin class close by that does drop ins, I will have to check them out now!

^ There are people who feel as adamant as this anon does about OCs so I'm actually glad you did get this response, because it would be unfair to give you some unrealistic expectation that everyone is going to make you feel welcome and show enthusiasm to play. Some people are just abruptly not interested and never will be. But for obvious reasons, they're not your problem if you're in a game, because it's their job not to be spineless and hand-wringing and carve out their parameters clearly if they do join mixed games. If someone shuts you down or gives weirdly curt/hostile replies that feel like conversation-enders, just drop the thread. They aren't making you feel good and anyone that willing to be a pissy tart from the offset is going to be inflexible.

But most of what you'll run into is people being open to OCs but showing preferential treatment towards canon characters. OCs have to work harder, but the players who do engage with you and who love OCs can absolutely open doors in games. Quality of your OC definitely has a factor in this.

I will say this too but it's more of a personal preference on my part: if you're taking the character from a personal story, don't write a huge deep long dramatic history because I promise you, you will be the only person who reads it, and we have this hangup about investment that can crop up at moments like this. Bullet point the absolute most important issues, keep it good and short and simple. Their deep CR with your other OCs isn't something warranting too many lines odds are if they matter that much they'll come up dynamically anyway, and an OC with looser connections feels more open and malleable to development than one that's clearly set into rigid stone through a novel-in-development or unfinished comic or what have you.

That way if someone does start tagging with you and goes to find out more, they won't have to do an hour of homework just to write three lines. For a writing hobby a lot of us are lazy readers and would rather make research easy so we can dive in quickly.

We like OCs who are pretty balanced I think. The more flexible they are in different situations and the more social they are in their nature, the easier their time. They don't have to be a nice person but if they're a jerk, they have to be at least entertaining of funny or nuanced about it, the troll who memespeaks doesn't lure many people. I guess the key thing is to avoid quirks or gimmicks.

Canons can get away with trite shit but super-talented child geniuses/chosen ones with a vast array of skills are like a proud nail: they get the hammer.

If you need any help there are a lot of people around willing to look over things like apps or discuss OCs who would be willing to give you a hand. Don't link it directly on rpanons because you need to love yourself, but you could find them on plurk or logged in via the DW message system where you're less likely to get shitstirring.

With that said, we're also just some anons with our own opinions and you don't have to take every bit of advice deeply to heart, your fun and what you want to do is what's most important in forming your own experience. Go ahead and take the dive! You can try it directly and tweak things you feel aren't working, find the spaces and people who seem open to interaction and generally get a feel for it. This isn't a zero-sum game where fumbling initially means that you'll never succeed with that OC, move them to another space or try modifying things that seem to be causing difficulty and just learn as you go. c:

i'm open to playing from a variety of canons: the 100, asoiaf/got, bioshock, borderlands, dragon age, etc. also okay with playing from things like hannibal, outlast, misfits, shannara chronicles, and star wars but i'm shakier. i mostly play from la or video games. i'm super open to cross-canon, though, and i'm mostly looking for somebody who likes the kinds of threads i do rather than just castmates. i like aus, threads with a driving force behind them (so not smalltalk texting, basically), horror (although it's not a necessity), adventure, unlikely allies thrown together, etc.

i'm okay with gen, shippy, and smut threads, and i like f/f, f/m, and m/m. i'm in a game, but i try to tag relatively consistently and if we mesh i won't drop it. leave me an account to pm if you want! p.s. since i run into so many people i already know in these threads, if you think you know me, you probably do.

if you're x ethnicity and there's a character out there that often gets the "ethnic stereotype as their only personality quirk" characterization a lot, is it weird to have a pref that you'd rather not play with people who aren't the ethnicity you share?

honestly? yeah. what are you gonna do, ask everyone their ethnicity before you play with them? what if they share your ethnicity but also fall into playing out the ethnic stereotype? either just opt out of playing with that character or take it on a case by case basis.

even people of the same ethnicity can be surprisingly bad about this facet of characterization because of internalized stereotypes

it's better to just say no X or warn you're picky about X's characterization so you can blow off the shitty ones
