Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I'm not sure if there's any specific etiquette, but to give some advice...

- Provide them with evidence to show the other player is squatting. Find all of their threads that you can, which shouldn't take too long if they're really barely scraping by, or show how many of their threads are just hitting the bare minimum for AC before dropping them. Use their AC history against them if they have a lot of strikes or hiatuses. If you can pull up examples of times where this player's inactivity has personally affected your character and their ability to be IC, even better.

- Don't make demands ("boot this player from the game!"), it's up to the mods to decide what to do in the end. If they want to give the player a warning first, respect that choice. Also don't be rude to them, but that's a given. Being polite and reasonable will always help your case.

- If the player gets a warning and time passes and they're still scraping by without further mod intervention, follow up with the mods. Maybe give the player a month or two to try and get their shit together and/or collect more evidence of their squatting, then approach the mods again if they're still at it.

- If you go through all of this and the player is still around and squatting months later, drop the game because the mods probably suck.

adding to the 'solve the jamjar' frustration: one solution could be to have characters agree to join the setting with full consent on the implications, either because they're going to receive a boon or to help their own world, or whatever--the point is, no 'you got tricked into it' or 'you were forced'.

will every character fit into that premise? maybe not, but that'll cut the wheat from the chaff quick.

make sure you have a mechanic in place to deal with infomodding/people playing the game instead of their characters. everyone wants their precious snowflake to be on the 'right' side and to win, so your current setup will probably have a disproportionate # of characters either defecting to side 2 or ignoring the factions entirely, which could potentially make the game unfun.

tbh, you're probably not going to see a lot of talk about whitewashing in since, aside from ido (who is only half-japanese), most of the characters in the original weren't japanese. even koyomi, despite having a japanese sounding name, apparently isn't meant to be seen as japanese (probably why she has the whole australian cowboy aesthetic)

also i have a lot more faith in robert rodriguez as a director than the hacks behind gits and death note.

the woman playing koyomi is vietnamese-american, so they're probably not gonna have koyomi be the blonde-haired/green-eyed design she was anyways.

I'm getting butthurt that I go through great lengths to underplay and tone down my (obscure) character's OPness so everyone can have fair play, but meanwhile everyone I play against is whipping out their Goku beams or Fate/Stay/Whatevers or bragging about how they need to be destroyed to .000001% of their body mass to have a chance of dying.

Why do I even bother. Should I even bother?

Yeah, that is a fair point. Side 2 wouldn't be without their reasons to also be lying, so it'd be murky more than black and white.

I'm okay with it skewing EDIT: but I also understand where you're coming from with players vs characters playing the game so I will have to figure out how to balance that. the idea is depending on characters that the plot would change. I'm still gonna have an overarching plan but it won't be set in stone, unadaptable?

That being said, I'd be aiming for small and shorter.

Yes because otherwise you'll just become one of those assholes with inferiority complexes who need to be THE STRONGEREST EVURR you're complaining about.

Nobody gives a fuck about power levels unless they're fighting.

I don't mind when people play their characters true to their OPness, but I will always get annoyed by an assumption their character is more powerful than one they know nothing about. There's no universal scale that covers every canon in existence. One day I am going to play Spike the Devil Man and watch people assume they win.

Frankly, you shouldn't underplay your obscure character. Don't overplay it either, just state the facts and play.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
as someone who plays a normal character, and not even a badass normal one: thank you. I don't expect my character to win against yours in a fight or anything, but thanks for not locking players like me out of doing shit just because your OP dude could blink and all conflict would fix itself.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently picked up a disgustingly op character myself and it's been pretty fun to play the character with all the powers. Don't stoop to the level of the average POWERRRGAMERZ because we all hate their smug DBZ ass as much as you do. Just continue to be reasonable but enjoy your ridiculous dude.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yes because that is the kind of nonsense that makes people shit on players like lock

we definitely notice and avoid those people

OP

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of my irritation comes from how all of this is entirely on me. It's not like it started off as deliberate attempt to mislead people. Moving out of the joke examples for a moment, my character doesn't have elaborate powers, but if I stayed strictly to canon most of what people could do to him wouldn't cause him pain, let alone injure him. But that's boring so I have him be cut and bleed all the time.

But in-game there's a lot of characters immune to swords or with wolverine healing. So I wrote myself into having my character be functionally 'weaker' than people who are more shameless.

Since I did this because I enjoy writing my character losing conflicts, I should just continue to enjoy him losing (and I do). I'm just annoyed and blabbing on rpanons.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-25 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I can sympathise- I love having my characters lose, it's interesting in all sorts of ways. But rather than reduce powers for the sake of drama, I've always tried to find alternative ways to lose. One of my favourite losses was my Wolverine healing guy getting a heavy weight harpooned into him and kicked into the sea.

I wouldn't call those players shameless, either. It sounds more like they're just playing their characters accurately. There's nothing wrong with saying a character shouldn't succeed in something they're capable of just because it would be more dramatic for them to lose.

a lot of people like to keep their lists small and private, and a lot of people only want close CR/good friends. I personally don't mind but it's always best to check first.

Hmm, as someone who handled this both as a player and as a mod:

Don't go in guns blazing, demanding a certain course of action. Squatters are frustrating, yes, but if you go in, immediately demanding that the mods remove X from the game and what not, you'll only raise hackles.

Do breach the subject very directly and providing as much proof as possible. You don't need some long story. Just try and get as straight to the point as possible. Name the player and the character, show your proof (if they always drop your threads three tags in, show evidence of that, refer to any patterns in activity like only posting just before the AC hits), if it affects your character mention that but no need to go into a huge story. Mention whether you have or have not talked to the player yourself yet. The more the mods know about the situation the better. If any of your convos are on publicly available HMDs, link them too.

And then just. Sit back. It is up to the mods to discuss things with the player / come up with how they want to handle the situation, so you'll need a little patience too while they figure out the best course of action.

if your game doesn't have a power cap, no. it's on the mods to enforce that kind of thing, not the players.

nobody who's gone to see it expected it to be an award winning piece of cinema

it's dumb fun and doesn't try to sell itself as more than that so there's not much to hate about it
