i don't care what others do, but i tend to use fanart because i despise trying to find pb's. hollow-art is the only one that lets you get really specific but their icons are usually bad quality imo.

if the character has no good fanart, guess i'm just fucked. i probably won't play them.

Hi rpanons, I'm mostly new to Dreamwidth rp (I used to RP on Livejournal when I was younger....) and while I have been doing a little bit of meme threads i only just made a plurk and I was wondering what the etiquette is about adding people? Is it okay to fan public plurks for they look interesting? Can I use the search feature and add people in my fandom? Can I add people I did a thread with on bakerstreet? At the moment most of my community info comes from quietly reading this community and while you guys are great I would rather also have some people with names and faces attached. Thank you sorry if this is the wrong place!

i would advise against adding people at random. most don't add people they don't know. mass-adds are generally only acceptable after joining a game, and only if the person has their contact info listed plainly for anyone to send a request to.

you can certainly PM people you've threaded with on bakerstreet. i've added people that way. just be aware not everyone will be willing to friend strangers as many people use plurk as a personal sort of twitter as well as rp update thing. as long as you phrase your request politely nobody will think it's weird though.

speaking as another grad student, this is just cringeworthy.

op was clearly just interested in making conversation, and seems fine with discussing vagueries, not actually looking at other people's ideas for their thesis.

"hey, my fellow grad students, share vague stories about similar projects, i'm curious" is not the same thing as actually trying to workshop thesis material with strangers. this is like treating someone going on facebook and asking friends "share stories about the whackiest professors you dealt with!" as them asking people for diehard serious rankings and assessments of their teaching methods when they're just looking for funny stories.

orz noob-ish question but how late is it too late to tag into other people's threads on a test drive meme?

i.e. most comments made around end feb/first week or march with no new comments on said thread i want to tag into......

you can just tag, the worst case scenario is that they don't reply. alternately you can pm them and ask if they would be up for a thread

fanart when playing on dreamwidth, pb when playing on tumblr.

mainly because it's harder to credit the artist when using icons on tumblr. here on dw i can link back to the artist in the icon comments. on tumblr i'm basically just reposting and it doesn't sit too well with me.

This is a valid point. There are some people in the game who I think are great writers and interesting RPers but their characters and mine just don't mesh for IC reasons, and no amount of trying to throw them together will ever change that. It's frustrating sometimes, because I'd like to play with them, but there is a limit to how much you can contort a character just because you want to play with someone. And there are also some people who are incredibly unreliable and drop things all the time, or only tag at times of day when I'm not available and vice versa, or are obviously only interested in their ships or their tiny cliques of friends and I can't see wasting my limited time trying to play with them.

I wrote an undergrad final paper in a communications class about, go fig, normal-based RP as a collaborative narrative. I polled LJ RPers and referenced articles written about other forms of RP, noted correlations, and compared it to traditional forms of storytelling. I later went to present it in front of peers and professors including the one I wrote the paper for at an event held by the university's English Honor Society. It was a fun paper to write and I got an A on it.

If it's a tdm thread, and they aren't still consistently tagging the other replies, I'd say it's too late. You could try pming them if you still want to thread, but I'd personally advise against just throwing a super old tag in there.

i use fanart even when there is a lot of canon material, since my character is drawn off model so consistently that i'd only get a handful of usable expressions

F/F, master/slave, fantasy setting. A young (~18-21ish) aristocratic woman acquires a slave around her own age, lots of fucking happens. I'd like there to be some conflict, but no straight up non-con; the aristocrat isn't heartless or pure evil, but she's been raised in a society where having slaves like so is the norm for people of her social standing. Over time, whether it's Stockholm syndrome or genuine affection, it could even become sweet.

Kinks I like: Oral, bondage, discipline, toys, dirty talk, ownership tattoos/piercings, face sitting, slutty clothing, anal play, rimming, RP within RP

Kinks I don't like: The usual watersports/scat/vomit, gore, foot-related kinks

I'd like to play the aristocrat. No preferences on OCs vs canon characters. Animanga, western animation, or game PBs preferred.

I play Ashe and I would love to get a fix for some awesome Balthier/Ashe stuff, preferably plot-oriented shipping with some build-up vs. straight up smut.

I'm also a sucker for Larsa/Penelo (I play Larsa), though obviously due to Larsa's age it would have to be cute fluff or exploring where their relationship could go once they're older.

Thing I really want: Players being allowed input and to help worldbuild when exploration time comes, since you said that would come later. My favorite type of game is bring-your-own-canon-monsters but I doubt that flies here for obvious reasons. It doesn't have to be carte blanche, like an above anon said, having guidelines to work with provided they're going to explore different worlds (one of the main draws of space games besides the techy tech and sci-fi stuff) and allowing player suggestions within an established framework would be great.

Thing I really don't want: Your character has to help save X over arching hero plot is really played out at this point. Granted, I'm probably one of the few who's really tired of this since it's a go-to staple of DWRP but I want different motivations in my games. Hell, I'd go for 'X all powerful entity got bored and wants the characters to paint every planet pink' depending how it's presented.

Either way, it sounds like you have a good idea what you want to do so I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store.

I like playing my characters with canon powers/weapons mostly because it's fun to mess with and adds dimension to the character in a lot of cases. I don't mind nerfing, that's an interesting bonus to deal with most of the time, but I don't usually see sci-fi games with straight up power nullification.

On the fence about giant robots or spaceships, but that depends on the setting itself and whether having those things would give significant advantage and/or whether that significant advantage could be balanced out.
