The mysterious depths of his manly cave

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Right but curious about what? You ask here and you're going to get people like the first anon who either wrote an undergraduate paper and can't tell the difference between that and an MA thesis or (worse) was an MA student with the mindset of an undergrad still thinking about how to "pad out" a paper to reach word count.

You might be an MA student on pretty much that level too though. Can't really tell, but the fact that you're supposedly thinking about your academic work and you come to rpanons to try and fish around to see what people here might have done doesn't say a whole lot in your favor.

college/uni/grad school

okay but where did anon say they ONLY wanted grad work or MA papers? furthermore, what does it matter? it's interesting hearing the kinds of things people choose to write about academically, especially if they align with your interests. come down off your high horse once in a while, your butt must get sore sitting up there.

by the way op, a classmate of mine wrote their dissertation about traditional gender roles in comic books with an emphasis on DC (we were graphic design students. I wrote about advertising, ha).

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
dang I would have never have thought that. did you get to talk to many speakers as part of your research?

Friday night, ladies and gents! Seems like a good time for a meme or big open post

It matters because if they are doing academic work at grad school level then looking at what undergraduates and other MA students have done (i.e. work that is at or below their current level of study) is actually counterproductive. Even looking at PhD dissertations is counterproductive.

They need to be looking at peer reviewed academic work quite exclusively. They need to turn their curiosity to the question of what has been published in books published by reputable academic presses and articles in reputable peer reviewed journals.

Sorry if you think it's all elitist or whatever, but there's a reason why academic work is not actually the same as what people are writing on their tumblr blogs. A grad student has a job to do, and that's to become familiar with what has been published in their field and on their topic. You don't get an advanced degree for being in conversation with what a bunch of people with just Bachelors degrees have said about something. You get it for being in conversation with what minted academics and experts in a field have said, and then contributing your own innovative ideas and arguments that go beyond them.

I'm enjoying reading everyone's comments. I haven't changed any of my ideas based on these comments, but I have reconsidered a few things about how to present elements in the offering.

Notes:
- CRAUs and OCs are going to be allowed
- Non-human characters will be allowed
- Canon updates will be allowed, but not as a mechanic where the person temporarily 'goes home'
- Exploration will be something that opens up during the plot, but won't be available at the beginning

I don't see anything else I want to address as of now. I'm still going to track this thread going forward.

+1

they're allowed to ask whatever they feel like for any reason or no reason, of course, but it's a somewhat worrisome question in context.

That would be an amazing premise.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
you are being elitist, honestly. not because anything you're saying here is wrong, but because you're overreacting based on an empty anoncomm conversation starter. anon makes a short, low-key inquiry as to whether anyone has ever touched upon fandom for their thesis, you jump in but "YES I HAVE AND NO I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT IT FOR YOU HERE, THE FACT YOU THINK I WILL IS PREPOSTEROUS". they clarify that they were only curious and not looking for inspiration or advice, you proceed to grill them as to why they care in the first place.

so, yes. yes you are acting like an elitist, self-important prat at the moment.

i don't think it's all elitist or w/e, i just think you're dumb. people take polls all the time about whether anons have done x or y, it doesn't mean they're looking for advice. "i'm doing this thing and i'm curious about whether other people have done similar things, isn't it funny" =/= "i wanna plagiarize your paper".

incidentially, if your kneejerk reaction to that last line was "i never said anything about plagiarizing, how dare you read into my comment", that's pretty much what you did to the op, soooo.

Re: OP

Oh, thing you might want to consider for your OC apps is having a history section and a timeline section. They're pretty much the exact same thing, I know, but for timeline you'd just have them go

1990 - born
1995 - mom gets killed by monster
1998 - gets adopted by wizards

And history has the tl;dr part where you talk about the significance of the monster and so on. I had to read a lot of OC apps, and OC players...I love you guys, but sometimes you're amazingly bad at establishing a chronology in your history sections and it gets to be a pain in the ass to follow.

OP, no worries if you decide otherwise, I just thought I'd throw out something I'd have done differently if I could. It makes it easier to figure out if someone's got a reasonable history or if they're a godmode in the making and it helps them trim some of the fat from their history sections.

I'm an OC player and ia with this message. seriously, timelines are a huge boon and can really help you get your shit in order when dealing with OC history.

No, anon. None of this is about plagiarizing.

The reason I said I wouldn't talk and that others wouldn't either is because advanced academic work is actually personally identifying. It links very quickly to a person's RL identity, their full name and their institutional affiliation. I'm not putting that out on an anoncomm, and neither would anyone else with any sense.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
so why bother commenting at all if you weren't going to play along? also notice how everyone else here was smart enough to be subtle and not name their full paper title or note anything too significant about their research.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
You are really kind of missing every part of the point here, anon.

i know someone in this conversation is missing the point but it's probably not who you think it is, bro

to be fair, some people need to be given some tough love about their theses, and many profs aren't willing or interested enough to give it. that includes things like "don't look for fellowship on this in an anoncomm echo chamber," in case that's what they're doing.

Re: to those in the market for a sci-fi space game

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't personally think OCs are any worse in that regard than canon characters, but the main reason i've seen a lot of people give for why OCs are game poison is that they're too often ridiculous gamebreaking sparklesues, so i was addressing that specifically. but yeah, i think you're right about the level of nerfing that would be good.

Re: da

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
jesus. you got into a grad program? read my second paragraph. my point is that op was interested in comparing life experiences, not advice or explicit topic discussion. i'm italicizing so that you, big academic you are, can note that those bits are probably important to understanding what i mean.

but this is spiraling, so i'm out. sorry about your thread, op.
