The mysterious depths of his manly cave

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

you got it pretty much exactly, anon. there's no official project deadline because it's a personal thing, i'm just not going to wait for fucking ever just to get blown off until the last second by "professionals" who used to be pretty good to me.

it feels like a slap in the face to wait all this time after calling 1-2 times a week for over a month just to get called 10 minutes before their office closes the day of my "contact me or i'm leaving" deadline.

not an art commission btw.

You still sound like a child throwing a temper tantrum though. And also like you can't distinguish between a business relationship and a personal one.

The amount of personal insult you're taking from the timing of this phone call ("a slap in the face"? seriously?), the fact that your initial comment didn't make it clear that it was a business you were contacting and not a friend, your defensive howling about the whole thing?

You are badly in need of some perspective here.

+1 to the OC thing

just fewer restrictions on character type in general, going off what anon above said. though i do understand needing to make sure characters aren't wildly OP, especially if OCs and AI-type characters are allowed, so the weapons/powers thing isn't a main concern for me. i'd rather my OCs be depowered and allowed in rather than never get the chance to play at all.

We get it, OP, you've got a lot of indignant feelings. But you're just going to have to face facts: the only person who thinks you're having a reasonable reaction to all this is you.

quit fluffing up your thread, op

I don't see why OCs would be the sticking point when we have canon characters out there who could flick a city off the face of the Earth with only their pinky finger, but I feel a level of nerfing is almost almost necessary regardless. a couple of games' rules these days seem to keep along the lines of "if you could trash a city we'll cap your power". I feel that's lenient enough to the players while ensuring nobody's muse can wreck the entire setting and set themselves up as god.

ime it's useful having an NPC force that can keep characters in check ICly, and there may be need for unique power restrictions depending upon the setting, but if we're planning on space-hopping I see no reason people shouldn't get to have fun with their smashing and fire breathing and whathaveyou.

any college/uni/grad school anons ever done their research/thesis on fandom related stuff? i know it's been done before (even at my uni) but i'm curious!

i'm a grad student in a humanities field that often brushes up against pop culture, and there's an aspect of it i'm really considering for my thesis.

brought to space to fight a civil war but stranded and lied to maybe-game

[personal profile] hellofoxtrots 2017-03-24 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
So I have a small game idea that I've been tossing around, bare bones.

Basically characters would be offered incentives/rewards to come fight in a civil war between earth and colonies, or two colonies etc. They're promised they can go home at any time if they forfeit their rewards but sticking it out would get them rewards and home.

Only as soon as the game starts, the other side contacts your characters stating that that's a lie. The first side can only bring you there, not back, and has no way of giving those rewards. Additionally not as clear cut a war (or really a civil war) as implied.

Asking side 1 gets that the go-back mechanic is broken "right now " and that no, they cant produce the rewards yet but when they win they can! Also of course the other side would say that, they don't want to lose. THEY might have even had a spy break the mechanic/machine!

Basically would have to be a small game. Would want to run it with a short lifespan, and a cap on characters and only a couple app rounds before the machine breaks. I'd only play NPCs so they could be real characters... but obviously they wouldn't be ~my babies, I could make things interesting with them, or kill them if needed.

The idea would be to be player driven, so what players decide icly goes. Stick to side 1? defect to side 2? ignore both and work on getting home? etc.

Still working out mechanics and world building. Any input loved.

Thinking I would take all characters, maybe with an option for established dragged-in characters on either side.

from what i've seen, they update it once a month, right around when they do the enable me post (it's the same mod)

i did a thesis on doujin culture in japan. stuff like that is easy for padding out the paper 'cause you can spend half of it just explaining what stuff is.

I love the Culture books so much. I was thinking just days ago how amazing it would be to have the characters on board a weird AI that was setting and also whimsical NPC.

riffing off of this, i'm in favor of characters getting to keep their cool gear and powers but mod if you're doing that please let normal characters without a laundry list of powers or awesome kit get some cool goodies and learn how to use them too!

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
In a word, yes. But there's no way I'm talking about my research or qualifications on an anoncomm and anyone whose advice you should be listening to on this is not going to be talking to you about it on an anoncomm either.

If you want serious input then this is not the way to get it.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
as a professor, please think really carefully about this. 90% of the time these end up super cringe. i understand that it's more fun to do a thesis on something you're passionate about, but make damn sure it's about your field, it's interesting, and it's relevant. i just had to read one of these that was basically an extra-long tumblr post about homosexuality in a particular canon that was really fetishy and embarrassing.

+1

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah please! (my character already has powers, but believe it or not it's really not fun when your strong muses don't have anyone who can go toe-to-toe with them. especially if they're argumentative little shits who are raring for a real fight but OOCly you don't wanna crush anyone's normies). it would be awesome if characters had the option to earn or buy items from a badass space arsenal...or even upgrades like giving them new powers of their own, perhaps?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, definitely! i would love for more mundane characters to be able to develop powers through ~SCIENCE~ or learn how to pilot ships or robots. depending on the character's background, this can be an interesting way for them to find a place among the other characters - finding a more direct way of making themselves useful instead of needing to be protected from danger.

certainly not looking to an anoncomm for material or advice. like i said, i was curious.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god no, it's nothing as embarrassing as that. i definitely plan on talking to my profs to make sure it's worth researching at all.

this was much further back in the day, mind, but I did a research paper in a linguistics class on Klingon. The fascinating thing was, the research turned up that most actual speakers of Klingon are not fans and have never even seen ST, they're just into conlangs in general.
