Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

[community profile] genessia too. Villains are openly encouraged to cause chaos and shit for good characters to respond to. Just a couple of weeks ago a city was attacked by one and they're still cleaning up the mess.

The game is a sandbox with tons of freedom afford to player-run plots.

lost raiders loves it some antagonists. the game is very morally grey and the bad guy characters there are all really popular for cr

I would kill for this.

I was just in another comment thread ITT saying how I wish I could play VTM over Discord with some folks. If I can't have that, this would make for a good alternative.

L.A. is used as well in-universe. Assuming this game takes place in present times, keep in mind the events of Vampire: the Masquerade: Bloodlines is considered canon (though they're intentionally vague on which ending is canon). LaCroix and Venus Velour are mentioned in Prelude, for example.

Not that it would be a bad setting, don't get me wrong. It's just you'd have to deal with that if you go with L.A.

So the game's been out for a minute, anyone looking to play some of the characters in the future? I'm psyched to see some aliens around.

Considering the reception it's gotten you could barely pay me to admit I like it, much less play from it, and that's before you get into the standard bioware fandom problems.

I can't really speak directly to Star Fox b/c I've never played it, but Nintendo has been shaking up a lot of their ip recently, and the results in pokemon and, yes, LoZ, seem to be beneficial. Besides, it serves all of us well when game companies embrace change.

That said, why the hell do you keep bringing up Dark Souls? Your whining about difficulty doesn't mean shit because it's a false equivalency. You know why? Because you're not actually playing the game. You're outright refusing to use the mechanics the way they're supposed to be used, because it's "busywork," or you can't manage to gather food or buy it like everyone else for some reason. Like some other anon mentioned, this is like going through Dark Souls and not using shards, or shields, or kindling bonfires, or summoning, or any of the mechanics that are there to improve combat.

Dark Souls did not come into your house and murder your dog, okay? Not liking games because the difficulty vs gameplay is skewed for you is fine. I mean, I never finished a Fire Emblem until they had hyper baby Phoenix Mode, but at least I tried playing it. I tried the usual strategies and units before i went "man I kind of hate how i have to restart if an enemy procs a 1% crit rate, maybe this game isn't for me" You're not even attempting that.

There is margin for error! It's not hyper lethal! You're just refusing to do everything built into the game that will make it easier on yourself, and then complaining that it's "too hard."

i think most of the problem is that trace has absolutely NO ROOM TO TALK and she comes off as being a smug cunt about this because of that.

you're playing breath of the wild like a person shoving chess pieces up their ass and blaming the game's design for why you never get a checkmate.

they mentioned ocean earlier. context suggests "it" meant ocean. it's not a big deal if they did or didn't, anon, no need to get hot over it.

how are the atmosphere and pace here?

Re: Your obscure favorite:

(Anonymous) 2017-03-24 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Gonna out myself here, but why not?

anime - Angel's Egg/Tenshi no Tamago. It's obscure, it's a head trip, it's deeply confusing, and something about the entire atmosphere really got me. It probably won't make sense, it isn't action-filled, but it's certainly something different.

western cartoons - Gargoyles. This was my childhood, and I love it dearly. It had a troubled existence, and the later seasons were...not so great, but the basic ideas were good. Also, the main human lady wasn't white, and she was a cop. And this was in the 90s.

books - Time to break out the hipster glasses (without which I am actually kinda nearsighted) and type a lot. Sorry!
First on my list is the Animorphs series. This, too, was my childhood. Again, not perfect, could have been better in places, but the story had me gripped from page 1 and some of the dialogue had me in stitches. The author wasn't afraid to tell us how transforming from human to nonhuman and back again would have its own issues (clothing lost, it ain't always pretty, etc.) Not bad for a 90s series.
(On the "great concept, could have had a better execution" front, the Five Nights at Freddy's novella. It was written by a play writer and a video game writer, and the style isn't that great. It doesn't follow the video game timeline to the letter, so I guess that makes it a bad adaptation? But I love it to death anyway, mostly because it does its own thing and is solid despite its flaws.)

On a more grown-up note, Mercedes Lackey's Black Swan. I'm honestly surprised nobody's RPing from it. It's based on Swan Lake, of course, but it does its own thing. It's all about awesome ladies, one of whom can wield magic (Odile) and about sticking it to the standards of the society it takes place in. Odette's love interest gets some development of his own, to the tune of being less of an entitled dudebro (or medieval-ish equivalent) and more of a decent human being. This is presented as a very good thing for everyone involved. Thumbs up.

live-action tv: Legends of the Hidden Temple. Again, this is a childhood nostalgia thing...even if nobody ever did get the fucking monkey statue put together right.
Xena: Warrior Princess. Even if all the liberties it took with mythology made my inner nerd rage, I loved how awesome this show was, loved the music...loved a lot of it.

ok I think I've babbled too much, thanks for putting up with it byeeee

Your definition of obscure is uh. Interesting.

video game: To the Moon- an RPGMaker game about two scientists who travel through a dying man's memories to grant his last wish. YMMV on how they treat certain elements of the story, but while it starts off somewhat light it really guts you emotionally by the end. Overall, a very emotional story, one that's stayed with me for a long time (also the soundtrack makes me cry a long time)

(also seconding Ghost Trick up above, that's an A+ game EVERYONE should play)

manga: Qualia the Purple - Yuri manga (not explicit) about a girl who has a very strange friend at school who has purple eyes and can only see people as robots. It starts off vaguely sci-fi and then completely shifts and becomes...well, it's hard to describe. It involves a LOT of quantum physics concepts and messes with your head, is all I can say. If you like Puella Magi Madoka Magica, you'll probably like this.

Comic: Lea Hernandez' "Cathedral Child" and "Clockwork Angels." Steampunk Wild West Victorian stories, with psychics and fairy-tale elements, and a touching lesbian love story. The art can be shaky but the writing is solid.

Book: Barbara Hambly's "Winterlands" series. The protagonist is John Aversin, a feudal border nobleman who's basically a grown-up Hiccup. John is cheerful, brilliant, socially inept, prone to tinkering, and somewhat famous for building amazing dragon-killing human-powered tanks with the help of his wife Jenny, the witch of the moors, who is in fact sometimes a dragon herself. Hambly's style is gorgeous and lyrical, all the characters are sensitively and sympathetically portrayed even in their flaws, and they face down tragedy and danger that often leaves consequences stretching far out beyond its defeat.

Basically, it's the drama, danger, betrayal and high stakes of Game of Thrones, with characters as sympathetic as How to Train Your Dragon's, moral dilemmas like Diane Duane's and a shapeshifting interspecies love triangle.

Movie: Onmyoji and Onmyoji II. Okay, so, imagine this: Abe no Seimei as Sherlock Holmes, with a hapless young Heian nobleman as his Watson while he investigates supernatural threats. Charming, weird, extremely shippable in that very particular "I would sell the rest of the world to Satan for the fun of watching it burn, but oh shit I'm actually attached to you" dynamic. There is also a lengthy manga series and set of novels, but I don't believe they've been translated into English.
