Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.

don't fight stronger enemies when you aren't equipped to and aren't good enough to pull it off without the equipment?

you have workarounds to the difficulty you're dealing with, either use them or stop complaining

neat for you. i never particularly cared about death note and i don't especially care if they make sure anything is super like the original, but i am frowning upon the whitewashing and obviously bad hollywood-ization going on since it won't bring anything new to the table.

you're playing in a way you're not supposed by and that the game isn't balanced for by refusing to get heart containers and use foods or inns for temporary health because you think it's "busywork"

maybe the problem is you and not the game

Recolle, probably

rain is a shit mechanic but climbing itself isn't that bad, if you run out of stamina partway along just use stamina food/potions, you can always find 6 stamella shrooms under impa's house and usually a bunch more in forests

there's almost never enemies right at the top of a climbable ledge, that's barely a problem

Re: ayrt

because the game isn't balanced around ignoring hearts unless you're really good at backflipping/sidestepping/shield parrying attacks. even so you can just use hearty foods/potions for extra health while you need it, and you start taking a lot less damage once you start getting better armor and finding stronger weapons even if you're shit at dodging

if combat's too much of a problem for you use stealth potions or the sneaking suit and just sneak past things or abuse sneak strikes for the 4x damage (should oneshot most enemies right now unless you're using a twig)

seriously. use the options you're given. even if you're trolling, the issues you're mentioning are really easy to fix by just using the options you have.

i think empatheias is the largest, it seems to be pretty fast and active too. the fastest overall would probably be airlocked or any other currently running murdergame, though.

Thanks, anon. I'm pretty reassured by that though I doubt it will satisfy everyone at this point.

you have a chance of getting boosted food effects while just cooking normally too! it's guaranteed when a blood moon's in effect though so that's the best time to do that. you can usually guarantee level 3 effects by cooking five of one ingredient at once but critical successes will add extra hearts or boost the effect if you're using less ingredients

getting up on ledges and picking enemies below off with bombs or arrows is a good idea, it's slow but safe and there's usually vantage points near enemy camps in the early areas

the sneaking suit you can buy in kakariko village is really good. it's got less defense than most armor, but with the whole set on, enemies can barely hear you so it's super easy to sneak up on them for sneak strikes, and it's much easier to catch critters and fish because they won't fly off until you're basically walking into them. it's not that expensive either and afaik it works against anything but lynels (which still notice you quickly, though a bit slower) and wolves (which can smell you). once you upgrade it twice it'll give you a movement buff at night too so you can easily get away if you get overwhelmed by enemies

(GAMEPLAY SPOILERS AHEAD)

if you're willing to explore a few tougher areas, the abilities you get from vah rudania and vah naboris are really broken. vah rudania gives you a three-charge barrier when shielding that automatically parries attacks back at the attacker (even guardian lasers or lynel attacks!). vah naboris gives you a quick AOE charge attack that causes lightning around you that stuns enemies for several seconds and usually makes them drop their weapons. getting to those divine beasts is harder than getting to vah ruta (vah rudania's area has strong but still avoidable enemies if you're willing to climb around, and an area hazard that needs some planning) but they trivialize combat against almost everything once you get them

every shrine contains treasure chests. there's a lot of shrines even in early areas that have chests with strong weapons in them. there's one based around using stasis and magnesis just a bit north of the plateau that has a chest with an edge of duality, a 50atk 2h sword that can stunlock enemies if you time your attacks right, has decent durability, and should be more than enough to oneshot anything you encounter for a while especially if you combine it with the sneaking suit suggestion and use sneak strikes to take enemies out in one hit before they even notice you

the game gives you everything you need to deal with its difficulty, it's just a matter of using the options you have available to you

i get why you'd laugh but on the other hand it also means most of the people everyone got so offended on behalf of apparently didn't mind the cap

most of the people on my timeline who dropped in a huff all played adult characters while most of the younger characters plan to stick around, ironically

I love Spiderweb games so much. I'll always be fond of the Exile/Avernum games because I've been playing them in one form or another for half my life at this point. They've been making indie RPGs since before it was cool!

So the game is going to skew even younger. I'm sure the mods will love that.

to those in the market for a sci-fi space game

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been working on a game for a couple of months, with a timetable that calls for me to open apps in a couple of months (in May). As of now I'm pretty set on what I'm allowing and including in the game, but I'm curious what one element you MOST seek in a game, and what element you LEAST want to see in a game (whether it has to do with what characters will be allowed, plot elements, game mechanics, or anything else). It's possible you'll bring up something I haven't considered, or that I may decide to do something in a different way than what I was planning, based on feedback here.

Keep in mind I'm specifically referring to a sci-fi space game. I'm not asking for help with concepts or worldbuilding. That stuff is already set.

Also, I'm fully aware I may receive contradictory answers.

nah, i actually believe them that they don't have any issue with them. i just think it's funny that all this drama was caused by people who weren't actually affected by it.

not by this mandate, true

but the way it was brought about and the response to it? is telling of how decisions would be handled in the future. and those decisions could affect them, if the mods suddenly decided to change something else that didn't suit them about the playerbase.

just because it isn't happening to you doesn't mean the problem is suddenly invisible.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
most of the people on my timeline who dropped didn't drop because of the cap, they dropped because the mods' behavior. tbh i don't think there were that many people put off by the cap by itself, it was everything else that was the issue

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Jim Sterling DOES mention the enemies hit way too fucking hard. Read the review again.

i'm not going to start the argument over what the mods actually meant by the cap and whether the restrictions were new or not again, but i will say i think it's worth waiting to see how these changes actually play out before i get all up in arms about anything lol. speaking as a younger character player that's been happy with the mods before now and is willing to give them the benefit of the doubt about this

Yes! I think I was eight or nine when I discovered Exile and I've loved them ever since. I can't wait for them to get to Avernum 3 with their extended Steam reboots. That was always my favorite and I'm dying to play it again.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
the issue isn't the cap.

the issue is the way the mods are handling it. changes and tweaks and new rules can have all sorts of variables involved to make them successful or fail, but the mod's mentality about engaging their playerbase isn't likely to change no matter what's being discussed.

this is a cute thread and you should feel good for starting it. nothing to contribute but i just wanted to say that this is a good thread.
