The mysterious depths of his manly cave

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

Just letting you know I went ahead and posted a comment about this stuff to the mod contact page. I stuck in a note that it's okay to unscreen, but I'm going to go ahead and paste what I said here. I tried to summarize the big points, but I'm sorry if I accidentally missed anything.

"So lately there's been some concern floating around the anon comms concerning the time frame we have left in game. The idea of bringing it to you came up in a thread, so I'm going to try to do my best to sum up the concerns. Under a sock since it's not just any one player who's feeling this and I don't know the names of the others to ask them to add on support.

The issue is basically that we don't know how much time we have left IC or OOC beyond a loose idea, and that means we don't know what kind of ending we might get. People are wondering things about how far we have left to go in terms of areas to go through and general plot and puzzles to solve. It doesn't look like anybody wants a solution just handed over easy, but would it be possible to give us a rough idea of what we have left to get through, without spoiling the plot?

Following from that, players are concerned over whether we still have a chance to get the good ending. Do we have enough time left? Are we progressing fast enough? If we aren't or if a good end just isn't feasible at this point, do we have any other options for a lasting impact and IC closure? There's also OOC worry over the possibility that you as mods might burn out or lose interest before we make it to the end. Personally, I don't know where you stand on that, but I do believe you've been trying to do your best to listen to and accommodate player concerns when they come up. I appreciate it.

Mainly it looks like people want some reassurance that we're not going to get stuck with a sorry, not good enough at the end, and to get some idea of what we have left to do, since it's hard to see from where the plot stands right now.

I'm okay with this being unscreened, btw."

Because Westerners dislike weird outcasts. Obviously only some outcast weirdo would kill people with a magic notebook, and not some fine upstanding young man.

it will be. I know some folks are planning to drop after voting or sit for a bit and fade out once the drama blows over.

show: Sapphire and Steel. it's a 1970s British television show that's attempting to do weird creepy sci-fi but it has absolutely no budget...but that actually WORKS as it occasionally delves into more surreal aspects. The pacing's glacial but it's super eerie. I think it's all still up on youtube, so check it out.

comic: it's only three issues in but I've been adoring Unstoppable Wasp. Teen genius Nadia Pym goes across New York making friends while she tries to form a club of awesome lady super scientists. It's super celebratory of girls in STEM programs and each issue ends with an interview with a woman who's currently working in a STEM program of some sorts.

michael sullivan's riyria chronicles are my favorite fantasy book series

they get a little tropey and predictable in places but they're a lot of fun and pretty well-written, and very complex if you're into delving into lore and figuring out connections/clues that aren't completely spelled out for you (while still being completely accessible if you're not into that, because the things you'll miss are more like little bonus easter eggs rather than things that are absolutely vital to understanding the plot). i'm surprised they don't have a bigger following in fandom spaces.

games: the monkey island series. (except for the fourth game. we don't talk about the fourth game.) one of the better things to come out of lucasarts, imo, and the telltale games were pretty nifty too. it's silly, it's (mostly) light-hearted, it's got a good theme song.

also your 'combat' in the first game is exchanging insults and comebacks with your opponent, and there is a three-headed monkey involved at one point. good times.

this is the same trace who stole free coding people offered on their code communities, modified it, then started trying to charge people for it.

and when confronted she ignored at least one creator, screened their comments, and, according to that creator, never replied.

not exactly rp-related but it tells you what kind of person she is beyond being a shitty mod.

my guess is that people are leaving ban because the intended taming method doesn't work anymore since blizz gutted the hunter toolkit. what's more, if you try to pull him down for a tame at level 100+, he dies.

i've seen people talking about purposely dying to get rez sickness, then stripping down and "punching" him without a weapon in order to safely pull him, using the fruit basket to pull him without harming him, so on and so forth.

point is, ban's a pain in the ass to tame now, so nobody's going to bother when getting ankha or magria just around the corner's so much easier.

"We'll surely avoid scurvy if we all eat an orange..." I still quote that song, along with the porcelain and "That's the second biggest (blank) I've ever seen!" to this day. I even literally walked a couple of miles to play the second game at my cousin's house when he got it. Still one of my favorite series.

Re: DEATH NOTE

Westerners like weird outcasts more than Japan does. Having a weird outcast go vigilante sounds familiar and comfortable to me as a Westerner, which... probably isn't a good thing for a Death Note adaptation, really.

In any case, both sides of the pond have both outcasts and upstanding young men, but the impact of making a character one or the other is going to be very different. Translating stories across cultural lines is real complicated.

? is there something wrong with the trailer? the one i saw didn't have anything special in it

i'm actually interested tbh. i got way, way, way in to death note back before it started getting weird as fuck. i'm very much over it now but i think this could be a fun new ride

the idea of a social outcast going on a killing spree isn't alien to us, right. some weirdo white kid with Problems and Anger is basically the formula for mass shootings, which makes the implications both oddly appropriate and uncomfortably true (both of which I'm sure this will completely miss)

but the whole weight of death note's plot and the morality of it and even just the make-up of the investigation that takes up the entirety of the first (actually good)half of the manga kind of hinged on Light's likeability and facade as an ideal, hard working japanese youth. We have something comparable to that in the West (think student athletes or something like that) and they're dropping the ball by not going in that direction.

can anons talk about the resident dumbasses in their lives so i'll feel better about mine?

Re: DEATH NOTE

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 03:08 pm (UTC)(link)
if it's something you care about, there's the whole whitewashing thing (their was a lot of controversy when they rejected an asian actor who tried out for the role, who had the chops for it, but didn't "fit the part" because he wasn't white) that has people complaining. considering the implications of entitled white anger causing actual mass violence in america and that L is going to be black (and knowing what happens to L) draws some uncomfortable lines, too.

but beyond that, like was pointed out upthread, the fact that this Light is a social outcast and not an upstanding citizen who, at least outwardly, is popular and believes in hard work and doing things the right way... really kind of misses the whole point of the original's core meaning.
