Wind Waker didn't have that many dungeons, either. However it never made you look for heart pieces, you could just make a beeline for the dungeons and complete the story. The only exception was the triforce hunt, but that's small potatoes compared to this free roam side content is mandatory because the game's hard BS

You either need spirit orbs or do a bunch of fucking busywork looking for food materials to make the "right" food.

"free roam side content"? You do realize BotW being open-world is its selling point, right? If that's not your thing that's cool, but don't act like a new formula has somehow upped the difficulty significantly just because you can't play the same way you always have in a completely different kind of game with completely different goals, or that it's a bad game intrinsically for being different.

This might be a cop out answer, but whoever you'd have the most fun playing! Enthusiastic muns who are excited about doing things with their characters get a lot of play in this game in general.

Also, this isn't a personal preference (I'd play with either), but there are a number of muns who don't want to play with characters under 18 or under 20, or if they will, they don't want to smut with them, so the 28y/o would have the largest pool of characters to draw from for cr, if that's a deciding factor for you.

it's almost like you could have paid attention to any of the game's media coverage that spelled out "this isn't ocarina of time version 5" and saved yourself a whole lot of whining.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
the game practically throws hearty food materials after you, they're goddamn everywhere especially if you're using the sneaking suit to catch things more easily

basically every item shop sells them too

and most vendors

and you need five for one food that'll give 15-20 temporary hearts, that's hardly "a bunch of fucking busywork"

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
looking for heart pieces isn't mandatory, the game is perfectly beatable without ever raising your hearts if you either make use of temporary hearts or learn how to deal with enemies by mastering backflips/sidehops/shield parries/baiting enemies one at a time

hearty food is almost always available at shops in towns, you can find hearty truffles in practically every forest if you walk around for a whil

there's a guy in kakariko village, the first town you should've visited, who sells you fortified pumpkins for def food, and def-raising fish are common in the areas leading up to and around zora's domain (shoot them with arrows, bomb the water, use cryosis to push them out, swim into them, hit them with a spear, they're not hard to get)

and you can still use inns for extra health too

your issue is really easy to fix but you keep making mountains out fo molehills to justify not doing so

use the options you're given

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 06:53 am (UTC)(link)
none of the "free roam side content" is mandatory, if you feel like it you can rush right into hyrule castle and fight the final boss as soon as you get out of the plateau if you make good use of stealth, backflipping/sidestepping/shield parrying, and pick your fights carefully, it's been done

your problem is that you're taking too much damage and you can't dodge in combat. so either learn how to deal with groups the timing for the dodging mechanics the shrine in kakariko teaches you, use food or inns to get more health, use food to boost your defense to withstand more hits or attack to kill things faster, use stealth (the stealth suit is really good) to avoid combat when you don't need to until you find better weapons/can upgrade your armor more, or hit up shrines to collect spirit orbs and invest in permanent extra hearts

you have plenty of options to fix your problem. use them.

though fyi what you're calling "free roam side content" was heavily advertised as the game's main appeal, if you're only interested in the main plot and not exploring and engaging with the world (which you have to for one of the main quests anyway unless you want to miss out on a huge chunk of story), this probably just isn't the right game for you

only 43 characters left in the game, holy shit. how many were there BEFORE the mods lit the fuse under their own asses?

free roaming was also Wind Waker's selling point, if you'll remember. Which I don't think it's any ccoincidence that BoTW has a lot of subtle nods to Wind Waker. (Beedle, most of the monster design, etc.)

But, Wind Waker felt more forgiving is the thing. There was a big world to explore, but you didn't desperately need o search for tools to even stand a chance, you could take thing how you wanted to, if you just wanted to do the dungeons and progress the story, that was fine, the only time when it forced you to dick around was the triforce hunt.

having a lot of hearts was something you COULD do in Wind Waker but i was by no means something that really felt like you had to work on in order to not die immediately in fights. fairies and stuff were generally enough to see you through if you didn't have that many hearts.

BoTW gets it wrong on some many levels by making combat way too leathal, making you hunt and have to find the RIGHT combinations of food and recipes to even stand a chance, it's not as static as just bottling a couple of fairies before going to do something, food gathering is incredibly tedius, especially if it meant you might have to fight to get those materials because you could end up using more food than ingreidients you get, not o mention potentially losing equipment to breakage.

Or say you didn't have to use some of your better food to get ingriedience for very specific buff food you need, you head somewhere to cook and, oh shit, it's raining. Now you can't cook. Do you understand what I mean by frustrating busywork yet?

Wind Waker had good exproation AND it wasn't relentless in it's difficulty, you can have that first thing without that nasty drawback.

As I mentioned further down in the thread Wind Waker had a huge explorable world without being relentlessly difficult for the sake of trying to latch onto the hard video game trend.

As I mentioned further down in the thread Wind Waker had a huge explorable world that wasn't "ocarina of time version 5" but at the same time it wasn't relentlessly difficult the way BoTW is for the sake of chasing after the stupid trend started by the fucking souls games.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
then go fucking play wind waker.

breath of the wild isn't anything like the souls games. not even remotely close. use the tools you're given, you asperging chipmunk, play the game the way it's intended, and watch the difficulty fall.

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 07:48 am (UTC)(link)
uhh... wind waker was never advertised as an open world game. at all. seriously, are you autistic?

Re: ayrt

(Anonymous) 2017-03-23 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
not to anywhere near the same extent. botw got constant focus on how huge the world is and how much you can do and explore and how the hours-long previews during e3 were under 2% of the game, and they've made it a point to constantly emphasize the world way more than they ever emphasized ww's.

you're exaggerating immensely. you can get by without ever increasing your hearts if you learn the timing for backflipping/sidestepping/shield parrying and make use of stealth and items as needed. you don't need to "work on" anything to not die immediately in fights, you just need to approach things carefully.

combat can be trivialized by items. spam healing items (apples and mushrooms are everywhere and always heal at least half a heart), use things that boost your defense or attack or speed or health as needed. make use of backflipping/sidestepping/shield parrying to avoid taking damage, bait enemies from a distance by throwing weapons or shooting arrows or using bombs or pick them off from a vantage point or one at a time as needed. use charge attacks for AOEs, run away if you're too outnumbered until some of the enemies stop following you, and if all else fails, just poke around until you find a good weapon to take things out with because strong weapons get increasingly common as you go on.

you hardly have to hunt for food, it's fucking everywhere. every forest has almost every kind of mushroom. you don't need to look for recipes either because in basically every case you can just toss five of one item into the pot and you'll get something good (5 hylian shrooms gives you an item that heals 5-8 hearts, 5 armorshrooms gives you the same heal but with a level 2-3 defense boost to boot, 5 razorshrooms is the same but with an attack boost, etc). you're constantly coming across herbs, mushrooms, fruits and critters just by going where you're supposed to go. you also almost never have to fight anything for materials because even if there's enemies nearby, you can just grab the food and run and you'll shake them off after 30sec or so.

if you're heading somewhere to cook you're heading somewhere with a pot. almost all pots are in towns/stables with a bed you can use. if rain keeps you from cooking, either wait it out or use an inn to skip to your preferred daytime and then cook. this is only ever a problem if you really want to use a pot you find out in the wild and there's barely any of those, most of the time you'll be in towns or at a stable.

you have options to deal with the problems you're encountering. use them. stop making excuses for why these options don't work or cause more problems when your comments make it obvious you've barely engaged with them.

Re: da

so do you want large, free, explorable worlds or do you want to run straight for the dungeons and fuck exploration? Because you've argued for both in this thread, so it only seems like things are "good" to you when they're things you like. And this is coming from the anon who said I didn't like the weapon durability mechanic, but surprise, surprise, I'm not crying about how ~unfair~ the game is because of it.

You don't actually want to play BotW. You want to play Wind Waker, and BotW isn't Wind Waker. Ignoring the game mechanics of BotW isn't going to make it Wind Waker. If you don't like dicking around looking for shrines or horses and taking selfies like I and many other people do, or even actually getting hearty/defense food, or listening to the things NPCs say to you, then fine, but don't act like this is a difficulty spike or unfair just because you outright refuse to play the game you're actually playing instead of Wind Waker.

anime: Dennou Coil
criminally unknown, super gorgeous in its subtle gestures, kid main characters and the girls not forced into any stereotypical femininity or boyishness, both main and rival are girls. once the plot kicks in from sol it's a wild ride and broke my heart forever

game: Ghost Trick
not as obscure as some other things out there but I most definitely get salty when I remember how much bigger the Ace Attorney fandom is without having heard of it. guys. GUYS. a story that takes place in one evening that you can't talk about because everything is spoilers. also Takumi literally did the Panic Dance, you can look it up on YouTube; he also wrote a song for his dog based on this iteration of him, you're welcome GT fans

DWRP is actually a lot more similar to LARP games than tabletop though. Tabletop mechanics just don't work well with a larger group, but LARP ones are made to be able to run very much like our games do where players are given a setting, maybe some NPCs, and they interact amongst themselves. A LARP GM is there more for interacting with the environment, NPCs, and resolving disputes among players. We're a bit more freeform than that, but the basic premises in how they run are incredibly similar.

show: misfits. british series that you either love or hate. based on a bunch of community service brats who are out in a storm that gives people random powers. lots of cursing/sexual scenarios/violence and general britishness. i love it.

movie: more than one for a movie, since for me, obscure is hard to settle on and different genres are more obscure for some than others.
kill your darlings - not the daniel radcliffe one, but the one with alexander skarsgard in drag. it was a few stories crammed together, and you followed them all through the movie until they coalesced to meet up. the cast was diverse and the characters really fucked up, but it made for an interesting watch.
the ref - denis leary when he was just getting started in being famous, playing at being a crook who takes a couple hostage accidentally over christmas and hilarity ensues. it's a comedy, but it has kevin spacey, and you can't go wrong with that motherfucker.
the monster squad - it was like the monster movie low-rent version of the goonies. all the movies monsters get together and of course, KIDS HAVE TO SAVE THE WORLD. i liked it growing up and it'll always hold a special place in my heart.

comic: not much of a comic fan, which is why my obscure choice might not be so obscure, but i always liked johnny the homicidal maniac growing up. it was weird and didn't make a lot of sense, but also dark and i had an emo period.
