Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I feel like I have to say this, because nobody has in the last several rpanons snowblind threads

This game has an expiration date. An expiration date that's coming up. It started summer 2015, and is supposed to last 2-2.5 years.

This means a number of things: That it would be silly for the mods to "put it out of its misery", that people are less willing to app to a game that's supposed to be ending before too long, probably a bunch of other things I haven't thought of yet.

because if you tell a lot of potential appers that only 15% of the game are female characters, regardless of your efforts, that's gonna put some people off because that doesn't sound welcoming. it's a self-fulfilling prophecy, but that's reality.

GOOD. Everyone should know my displeasure.

it would be entitled had things been set out this way FROM THE BEGINNING and the players of minor characters were crowing that the mods should change the game just for them. but the fact that would be reduced plot involvement based on age was never made clear prior to when said characters had already apped in. ergo it's the mods who are being unfair here, since they're the ones pulling a last minute switch that's going to impact players who apped under false pretences.

the only ones being entitled here are the mods.

the difference is, despite the dark shit that happens, saber and rin still got to have their own goddamn agency and control of their own destinies in the vn. none of the female characters got that privilege in zero, only the men. that's the whole point of dressing down the original comment shitting all over the vn and praising zero, because they got their criticism completely backwards

zero is still a good thing, despite its flaws, and so is the vn, but to mark your comparison based on how the female characters are treated, zero has way more against it. it's weird that someone makes their stance based on that.

tbh I'm not the one who is making this the marker. What I've been saying in this thread is what material is available as part of the franchise and what, imo, is more suitable for newer fans to use to test the water with.

Anons in this thread got their collective undies in a bunch because Zero dared to get mentioned and tried to trot out reading the VN as the be-all-end-all of what a brand new fan should go to. And I disagree.

I actually don't have a horse in this race as far as treatment goes, but I did have a knee-jerk reaction above because I'm a little bored of this line that "FSN is ~so progressive~ and good to its woman and Zero is fucking awful and out of step and no-one should ever touch it or acknowledge it ever omgggggg" because it's such a myopic view of FSN.

What I object to, basically, is acting like FSN is all high school cuteness and women's empowerment and overlooking its own canonical grossness in favor of screaming about how much more awful Zero is. Like, ladies, please, you're both got excessively gross bits. Chill.

http://rpanons.dreamwidth.org/69645.html?thread=222273293#cmt222273293 this is a little more than "daring to mention zero". not that the comment they replied to was any less salty, but this thread started from the linked one.

parent up every once and awhile, you'll save yourself a little embarrassment.

wanting to play in a full game as advertised is entitled behavior now?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-20 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm in a similar, but different boat.

except i started off as the new thang, that new, fresh, and fun person to write with. which was a first for me actually. i've never really had someone blatantly favorite me, someone who'd drop everything to tag back. that's never been me. it was... heady? knowing that someone enjoyed playing with me so much.

only their flist eventually threw a fit, because how dare they move on and have fun! what about us??? and that felt bad too. because knowing that your fun is coming at the expense of someone else's kinda sucks? (which is shitty, i shouldn't have to feel bad about having fun with someone. wtf?)

this went on for a little while and then the tags just stopped coming, because my partner felt bad? so because those people, who they're not even friends with anymore, made such a deal about everything it's left a bad feeling over our entirely play. it's been a good two months or so since i've gotten a tag from them. and it really sucks.

because i still want them. to the point where i've very little interest in even trying to find a new partner. just because... i dunno. no, actually i do know. i just want my old threads back. i don't want new threads and new characters. i want the ones i already have!

which is the part where we're in a similar boat, only i've yet to find a way to deal with that. it really does feel kinda like a break up though, that wasn't far off of the mark. maybe it's one of those things where we'll just need time? one can but hope, right?

okay but again, setting aside the question of whether or not the problem the mods are trying to solve is a legitimate problem, how does the cap even fix it?

the mods have acknowledged that characters can "age out" of the cap, either from canon updating or from time spent in the game. that opens up slots in the cap for more under eighteens to app in, but nothing has changed about the characters already in the game. combine that with the fact that there are so many characters without explicit ages that are basically just "late teens," what's stopping someone from just listing them as 18 to get around the cap? without explicit canon evidence to contradict it, there's nothing the mods can do in that scenario.

it could very easily shake out that we have 20% of the game being 14-15 with a smattering of canon 16 and 17 y/os, a huge contingent of basically-18s, and then the rest of the adults.

how does that remotely accomplish what they're trying to do?

spirited away is one big metaphor for prostitution. fucking hate that one and it's been debunked yet people still buy that crap.

things have been set this way from the beginning, they just weren't put in such explicit terms. now that it is explicitly stated, people are upset and demand the mods change to fit them.

it's not like the game explicitly stated all underage characters will get to do everything by virtue of just being in the game. they've had restrictions since day one. the mods realized there was a clarity issue in the rules, they're fixing it now.

people are just pissed off that the clarification isn't in their favor.

I've been both sides of this and it's rough and I'm sorry you have to go through it, OP, because it does hurt emotionally even when you know, logically, its just rp, not a relationship. Being someone's priority is a wonderful feeling and of course we'd all like to stay that way forever. But even marriages (I've heard) go through cycles and this isn't anywhere near that level of commitment. I've been the one that's gotten burned out on something after a year plus of writing it multiple tags almost every day and I've been the one left behind for something shinier. All I can offer is don't take it personally. Which is hard but you've got to force your mindset to adjust so its about them, not you. Not them being jerks but them being burned out or burned up or needing something light and silly/dark and angsty/different than what their previous threads with you were being/etc. Sometimes people need something new. So remember that's not your fault, they just ran out of steam before you did and one of you was eventually going to hit that point. If it hadn't been them, it would have been you. So, move on. Like the others suggested, tag out, do memes, find silly, light stuff to help you get your mojo back. Pick up a new character, try a new pairing, try out a situation you wouldn't have thought to before with your character. Tag out, try test drives, haul in other friends to try new stuff. Don't go back and reread your old threads. Not yet. Not until you can without feeling hurt. And you never know. Don't wait on it but maybe your old rp partner will come back after they cycle or maybe the two of you will find other characters down the road that click. Understand that most things in life come and go, very little lasts forever, most things have a season, you're always going to be moving on from something somewhere. Enjoy what you get and work on learning to let go without damaging anyone when you need to.

Stop stroking your grudgeboner for a second and look at the ooc comm. There wasn't all that much planning for how to defeat the big boss in the first place. It needed to happen, the game dropped the ball on planning for how to make it happen, deus ex machina it is.

I do have one question I haven't seen anyone else bring up. Where's all the intense horror content that the mods are so frantic to protect our fictional chillunz from? So far we've had one exploded planet, a few bodies of dropped characters, and one diplomatic mission that seems to have made zero impact so far. There hasn't been any hardcore content that the mods can point to and say "See that? This is why we aren't comfortable with having minors here!" so their claims sound a little goofy in context. Eluvio so far has been like a milder season of Star Trek.

Also adding to the general consensus that the characters are doing all right. None of the younger characters have burst into tears or been unable to handle themselves in the game so far, and most of them already have support structures in castmates and CR with adult characters. OOCly, the mods know this, and using IC hurdles as an excuse makes no sense because the mods themselves decide what is and isn't IC. If they wanted a mostly or entirely adult game, they should have made that clear from the start instead of quietly accepting all these characters and giving them a few months to settle in before, surprise! You aren't entirely welcome after all, and we're going to restrict access to plot because of your age.

I like the thought of my adult character not having to act like child soldiers are a okay as long as the children have super powers

(Anonymous) 2017-03-20 04:27 pm (UTC)(link)
i don't like it at all personally. even implying that a god would deign to be nice and friendly and helpful toward the player is uncharacteristic of souls to me. the game's atmosphere - especially 1's - is extremely harsh, cold, and hostile; it's part of what makes it such a struggle. nobody wants to help you.

solaire being this completely normal human man from astora speaks volumes of his character. it's great worldbuilding for astora too, if you remember oscar, because it implies their people are generally kind, knightly and willing to extend a hand. solaire being a completely normal man is inspiring since he's so powerful, but he doesn't look like much at all. it's awesome to see a regular person defeating all they come across just like you(r player character).

at least, until he meets those sunlight maggots... and that's why it makes that bad end so much more sad, too.

at least to me.

some of the stuff the stats anon doesnt take into account is the chunk of our female characters that are f/f only so i hope its not as bad as they make it seem

as someone tdming a female character i've already secured at least one potential multipartner thread for when i app
i hope you get the same!!!
