Rundown:
rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

There's just not a lot being released these days. I'd kill for there to even be a fourth as many BL games being released as there are vns aimed at dudes each year.
I'm sad too. I'd take a bunch of BL moege at this point if it means we'd get more releases. I know the galge's market been struggling lately, but does anyone know why the BL game market in Japan keeps shrinking?

Do you think that the western market for them, assuming the titles we do get sell well, might lead to more content produced in hopes of tapping into the English market? I know it's wishful thinking but damn it, I want to believe.

I think it's just that it's a small market and it could never really support a huge number of releases to begin with and the VN market in general is on a downward trend (and has been for a while). Right now we also have otome and BL serving different niches––you don't really see all-ages BL these days (outside of ports of originally 18+ games) because otome serves that niche now.
I think the western market, while probably not rivaling the JP market in most cases, is pretty significant for VNs in general, particularly more mid-tier stuff (like for big names like Key or Age it's probably not as substantial as it might be for a medium-smaller company). Most BL and a lot of otome is more in that category (like I'm reasonably sure Ozmafia has sold more on Steam now than it did on Vita? I have to double check the numbers though). Anyway, it's a little hard to say how much impact the west could have on BL right now since... well no one else is localizing things and I'm slow as balls right now.
Good Haro just got an ask about this, well. (Did one of the anons from this thread send this to her?)
Though, I think another possible factor on top of everything else might be because a lot of BL developers not named Nitro+Chiral tend to go inactive after a releasing a game or two. And this apparently happens to devs like PIL/SLASH whose games were well-received by BL fans.
Any average, risk-adverse developer in Japan looking at the BL market in the already shrinking VN industry is probably not going to be filled with too much confidence at most of their potential competition disappearing somewhere after releasing a single game.
That being said...
Is it bad that despite what I said just now, I'd be interested if most of the galge devs in Japan decided to take a risk and pull a CLOCK-UP by experimenting with the BL market? Galge devs are looking for any way to survive thanks to the currently oversaturated, shrinking galge market and the BL game fandom is starved for new games, so I think it'd be a win-win situation for both sides.
Sadly, there's no way this is going to happen, so hahahaha... ha...

(Anonymous) 2017-01-09 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)Nitro+Chiral is a beast when it comes to the BL market. Their stuff sells like hotcakes so I'm pretty sure they will be around for a while yet. I wonder why everyone else has such a tough time of it though. It's not like the market is oversaturated when it comes to BL games.
Love Delivery seems to have done well with Taishou Mebiusline and they've even got a new game coming out. Parade seems to be doing well too. There's also GRISEDGE who is coming out with their second game Kintouka in March. Though both it and Galtia went through a lot of delays. So maybe there's hope? I also think that since there's not a lot of BL games in English or many coming out commercially in Japan that expanding into the overseas market would be helpful. Like you said, the fandom here is starved for releases and unlike the market for stuff aimed at dudes, there's not out here or coming out period so the risk of oversaturating the market is slim. Of course, there's other factors like if the game would appeal enough with its story to sell well but it would be easier for them to stand out since there's not hundreds of them to choose from.
Well there's stuff like YariMesu so I guess it's always possible? But there's got to be someone on the staff who'd be willing to and have enough pull to sway other people in the company to try to make a BL game.
