Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

ARGUMENTS FOR/AGAINST APP CHALLENGES

mods, how do you decide whether or not to allow app challenges in your game? non-mods, do you see yourself allowing them if you were to ever run one? why or why not?

I didn't when I was a mod, but I think I would now. Before I felt that it made apping more stressful than it needed to be and my game was really small, so it didn't seem necessary, but now that I'm older and busier, I understand more that it's hard to be the one to reserve first when your schedule is at odds with what's going on in a game's schedule and while it's just a hobby, it is one that many of us derive a lot of joy from.

I don't recommend it because it's a pain in the ass that leads to more work for the mods and unnecessary competitive melodrama. Nobody can bitch about the mods being biased if it's first come first served. People also tend to get over it if they lost out on a reserve because they were too slow to submit theirs a lot faster than getting their apps declined because they were competing with someone else for the slot, especially if there is an insular cast/clique involved. If you're worried about quality then make your baseline app standards higher.

You can always just switch out what time reserves open from month to month to make it more fair to people in different timezones.

oh, anon. you don't rp much, do you. mods are always biased. i've seen numerous complaints about 'time zone bias', particularly if mods don't go by an american time zone (and then again if they do because 'gmt should be the normal one'). people will always bitch because someone is always getting left out. it's the nature of the beast.

The bitching is an order of magnitude less when it's first come first served than when there's competition involved, anon.

I've modded games both with and without app challenges, and the one with challenges sparked infinitely more (and more vicious) bitching than the one without ever did. People were also shut down pretty fucking fast when they whined about time zones, because outside of a few self-centered lunatics, most people do realize it's actually pretty fucking reasonable for mods to do mod shit when they're, you know, awake and not at work/in class.

"If you're worried about quality then make your baseline app standards higher."

I wish this was more common if people were actually so concerned about getting the 'best' characters or whatever. It's too late to handwring about letting in the bads into the game when standards only get attention because there was competition.

to me, it's the only way to make apps fair for everyone. not everyone is in a timezone or has a work schedule that allows them to be there right when reserves open, and because of that some players can be pretty much constantly screwed out of a chance to app characters that they want. i'll happily take the extra work if it means that everyone gets a fair chance at a character.

it's not even that much extra work lmao. oh no, you have to read a few more apps than normal.

i've made sure every game i've modded has had app challenges available, and i will continue to do that.

I'm in a non-American timezone and can't stay up until some godawful time in the morning for east coast midnight anymore due to having a 9-5 job, but I still wouldn't have them if I were ever to mod again. It's extra work, and as a player, if I put the time in to writing an app, I don't really want it wasted because someone challenged me. First come first served.

If the game had no formal app round but just accepted them whenever, then I wouldn't allow app challenges. Instead I'd have maybe a week or ten day long reserves.

However, if the game has discrete app periods, then I would allow app challenges because honestly if there are multiple gunning to play a particular character in my game, then I want whoever looks like they're gonna be the better player. Plus, speaking from past experience, sometimes app challenges can help give that excuse not to let in a player who you know is gonna be annoying as fuck to deal with either as mods or as fellow players.

In this second example, though, I'd probably still have 'reserves' but I'd call it 'intent to app' instead. Let's people know you're considering it but isn't mandatory. However, could be useful in case of needing a tie breaker.

No app challenges. Never again. It's a lot more work for very little payoff, and as much as people might whine if they don't get their reserve/app in before someone else, they will whine much longer and much louder if they lose an app challenge.

I've found a better way of dealing with the few characters that might get multiple people wanting to app in a round is to stagger things so that reserves last for only part of the app period, and if the reserver doesn't app, it goes to free-for-all, and to limit the number of re-apps allowed.
