Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

this article claims that retail jobs are going to be automated. lol. i'd love to see the robots walking around the store selling shit.

i don't doubt automation is happening, but this chicken little shit that portrays the future as almost everyone being jobless and homeless while the evil robots take over is just a bit ridiculous.

no one believes that a store is going to be completely and entirely manned by robots. all it means is that you're going to have a fewer amount of humans present in the store, which still fucking sucks

see: self checkouts. one person is now running 4 lanes. sure, there are some normal lanes open too still. but that self checkout lane is still one person doing what used to be a four person job

if you don't think large companies eat that shit up and are going to continue encouraging that sort of development, idk what to say, man

well maybe if those four people weren't so fucking incompetent that customers decided that they'd rather bag their own fucking groceries because cheap ass grocery stores keep hiring 90 year old ladies too senile and twitchy to properly bag groceries.

i'm glad those idiots are out of a job. maybe if they did their job efficiently and properly, we customers wouldn't have decided that we could do a better job on our own.

nah man automation of jobs that most people think of as too "complex" or "creative" for robots or requiring too much social nuance is a real thing that's happening

eg, barista robots that will remember you and the way you take your coffee no matter where you are, robots that write music, and watson (IBM's robot that went on jeopardy a bajillion years ago), which was developed as a doctor robot

i'm a programmer and something my mentor says all the time is "the ultimate goal of our job is to make our jobs obsolete."

this is a good video on the topic (all the examples above come from here): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU

thinking that automation is going to stay just in manufacturing/unskilled labor and that there isn't real potential for it to balloon the unemployment rate is naive

i mean probably not, but mitigating the damage means being aware of these issues coming down the pipeline and not just sitting around with our thumbs up our asses

nobody's saying it's never going to happen, but if you think it's going to happen in your lifetime, your mentor seriously blew smoke up your ass.

my mentor does not literally mean i should make myself unemployed, no. good eye, sherlock holmes

i know it's a shocker to care about what happens in the future, but there you have it
