i have really thick, curly hair that i've only recently grown out past my shoulders for the first time in years. do any of you anons have advice on how to deal with tangles/maintain and keep my hair healthy?

conditioner is your god. condition it every time you wash your hair, and when you get out of the shower, comb your hair gently with a wide-tooth comb to work out the starts of any tangles before they get a chance to form. i comb my hair out and then scrunch it gently with my hands to sort of urge the curls to reform without the tangles and it works pretty well for me.

Depending on your texture, you probably shouldn't be washing every day. Look into cowashing. Use a wide tooth comb and never a brush. Braid before bed.

+1

Cowashing is great for thick curly hair. Definitely look into it.

Wash it either every other day or once every three days. Body wash with a washcloth in between so your body doesn't get nastay in between.

Comb with wide toothed comb. Use a conditioner you're comfortable with; you know your own hair best.

A personal suggestion is don't scrub at your head with a towel. Lightly wrap your hair with a towel when you get out, but wring it out with your hands to get it dry. Comb it, and as an above anon said, squeeze it with your hands. I find towel drying makes it frizz the fuck out.

use dry shampoo on the scalp only between washes if you're oily, but moisturize the ends between washes. i use an argan oil serum but coconut oil could do it too!

leave your conditioner on for several minutes in the shower. i wash my hair, condition it and leave it in while i wash my body or shave, and then rinse it out afterwards.

let it drip dry with a towel on your shoulders if you don't plan to do extensive styling, don't towel it out. this takes time and patience if your hair's especially thick so shower several hours before bed/you have to be anywhere.

get. a hairdresser. that knows how. to cut curly hair. i cannot stress this enough. a good hairdresser will make or break it. you may have to spend a little more but you can do very minor trimmings between cuts and make up the money you'd spend on a cheap hairdresser.

yo, throwing my advice in the pile as a curly-haired anon

dont use a towel on your hair, start putting aside old t-shirts to plop/plunk with. i sleep with my hair tied up in one and i find that stacks the curls on themselves well enough that it looks healthy and springy in the morning without much work and it doesnt get flattened. invest in a good diffuser and a leave-in conditioner - i really like r&b from lush. take product in your hands, flip your hair upside down, and scrunch it in from the tip to the root when it's wet. try not to brush or comb your hair when it's dry, ever. depending on your curls, even a wide-toothed comb when its dry might wreck the way your hair's locked together and make it look stringy or frizzy!

otherwise +1ing everyone saying cowash and condition, condition, condition, and dont shampoo every day, and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD FIND A HAIRDRESSER THAT CAN CUT YOUR HAIR.

i'm honestly surprised to see all these anons saying not to wash it every day because my hair turns into an awful, snarled mess if i don't wash and condition it every day. washing it every day keeps it nice and smooth and non-frizzy and i haven't had any issues with getting tangles ever since i switched to washing it every day instead of every other day.

This is what I do, and I have really long very curly hair, but it's also very fine.

Use detaingling combs. Or wider toothed combs. Brushes are fine, but they can't be those thin brushes. I usually get this for a basic brush and comb: https://www.walgreens.com/store/c/conair-brush-styling-essentials-brush-and-comb-set/ID=prod3791665-product

When washing your hair you need to use conditioner. You can also use conditioner at other points to help comb it. Personally I'll add a little bit when just brushing my hair in the morning, because I have to brush it wet.

A big help in keeping tangles low is if you can braid it when you go to bed.
