All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

are you the person in question or something? not everyone is appable. mods fuck up. and, most importantly, it's a fucking peeves thread. fuck off.

probably not, since i don't play side characters. but to say a character is 'unappable' when they've been apped into a game is clearly wrong. more likely the character just doesn't fit with the cast already there. so the cast doesn't have to play with them. unless there's a cast cap, there's no reason for the op to be so salty over someone they don't like apping in 'because wah, they don't fit'.

outside of eudio, most games need an actual app. if the app had enough personality/history, then it's clearly appable.

as for where it is? um... since when has a peeves thread been above people coming in to point out it's a dumb peeve. that's just something you as a peeve dropper have to potentially deal with on either anon comm. you're not in some blessed safe bitching space just because you say it's a peeve. so take that attitude and shove it, thank you.

Someone got into my game with a character who's in a coma the entire series and is awake to say maybe one line by the end. This character isn't even shown saying or doing anything in flashbacks afaik.

So yeah, I'd say that sounds like an unappable character that a mod with extremely low standards still got into a game.

the characterization comes mainly from the drama cds, manga, and other sources beyond the original anime as far as I've gathered

but to say a character is 'unappable' when they've been apped into a game is clearly wrong.

not necessarily. if the mod team is unfamiliar with the canon and there's not a good source to verify, it's possible for someone to whip up a meaty app for a nothing character if they're good at padding it out with headcanon/extrapolation/pure bullshit and get accepted. whether or not this is fine is obviously a ymmv thing and can also be dependent on the game. some are fine with minor characters as long as they're well thought out, other games have rules in place requiring more substantial canon to be appable. also, if the character is 90% headcanon they'll have to work to make sure the rest of the cast is on the same page, which can be a pain if the player isn't communicative or has a "this is how i'm gonna play, dwi" attitude.

regardless, some minor/nothing characters can still have a big impact if they had a strong connection to an existing cast member or were the catalyst for an important event in the canon. nina from fma comes to mind. she has very little screentime before she gets killed by scar, but her being made a chimera and subsequent death traumatized ed and al and years later they lament being unable to save her. or rin from naruto, who was the whole reason obito became the big bad and everything went to shit. there are a lot of reasons it could be a problem.

really any character that gets fridged early on runs the risk of this. a dead lover, family member, etc will be hugely important to the protagonist and may drastically change their motivations in game, but there's often not much meat to the fridged character themselves, resulting in a lot of headcanon.

(putting aside the other problem, which is that these kinds of characters rarely get apped for any other reason than to join an existing cast and be that super important person to the other characters. i'm sure most of us have deliberately joined a cast at some point, but i'm always a little wary of very minor characters whose main defining features lie in their relationships to more well developed characters. apping a character, not because you're excited about the game or the character themselves, but because character x is going to shit themselves/fall all over character y who died tragically in canon and spurred all of x's subsequent development, rarely ends well.)
