All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

as an mcu player, no comic knowledge is necessary. the movies are their own entity, which is why they're listed as their own verse in the marvel world. some of the origin stories are pretty different, or the characterizations are wildly different as well. as long as you say you're playing from mcu/netflix and not comics, no one will care. i play from the movies and don't read comics. that's sort of the point of watching the movies, to be able to get into that world and those characters without 20 years of comics behind it.

but watch the series entirely, or up to the canon point you want to play. especially with the netflix shows, things can change pretty drastically, so if you're playing matt s2 and you've only seen s1, you really do need to catch up, because his personality changes quite a bit (clearly just an example). just make sure you actually watch it and i promise you, no one will care.

or, to be more fair, some people will care, but they won't have any ground to really bitch because they're two separate verses and as long as you're up to speed on your char's canon point, they're just being grumpy assholes.

i've watched all the netflix series! i'm just kind of intimidated about playing from them, both because the mcu has loads & loads of characters and i know i'm never going to remember every single one and not all the movies/series interest me (i watched the first episode of aos and didn't really like it for example). and because even outside the mcu there's decades of comics that i know nothing about.

i just kind of feel bad because i feel like i'm a hardcore enough mcu or marvel fan to play from the mcu. even though it's kind of silly and like you said, at some point you shouldn't really care that much what people think.

i can only tell you this from my personal experience, but you'll be fine. i really only like the movies and don't watch aos or agent carter, but i've liked the netflix series, so i'm in the same boat as you. and there's no reason your character should remember all the movie characters, unless that's their job in the series somehow. the basic rule you should try to stick to is, make sure you're familiar with the chars in YOUR series you're playing from, and then anything outside of that is just an extra bonus, if you want. eg; there's no reason for luke cage to personally know any of the avengers, but he's probably seen them in passing on tv. doesn't mean he has to know or act like he's bffs with them if he plays in a game with them. just like none of the movie mcuers might know any of the show cast, because they're more low-key.

just play what you play. as long as you're ic with your character and willing to play with others, there's no reason for you to know everything about everyone. you're overthinking it. just relax. you're good, anon.

in regards to playing from the netflix series, you don't even need to be on top of all the movies in the mcu, imo. the first avengers movie is important if only because the netflix series are all set in new york.

outside of that, it's like anon above me said. the netflix characters have probably seen the avengers in passing on television, but there's no direct connection. as for what they might know movie-wise, i would assume both avengers movies, winter soldier, and civil war would be the biggest points to hit. afaik, nothing from aos has made an impact outside of the show itself because it's the red-headed stepchild of the mcu, so i wouldn't even worry about what happens there.

well, no, no right now. but the future seasons will be timed after the new movies. so it's not a bad idea to watch them little by little.
