All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

If a character tends to drop their gs (hanging out vs hangin' out), do you find it annoying if people type it out or not?

I know typing out accents is ... annoying at best (especially if it's so bad that you have to read the passage out loud three times before you manage to get some idea of what they're trying to say), but I've personally always thought of dropping the g as pretty unobtrusive as far as reading goes.

idk about anybody else but i'm pretty fine with it. written accents start getting intolerable for me when i have to put in effort to figure out what i'm reading, and most words are still perfectly legible after a dropped g

as long as it's not every other word, which is a bit distractin', it doesn't bother me either way. if i'm familiar with the character and their speech mannerisms then i'm going to hear the dropped G whether or not i see it.

i've played a couple characters that talk this way, and will occasionally type dropped g's out in tags. not every single time, though, and not more than once per tag at most. i think the occasional dropped g is okay just to get across the fact that the character tends to do it, rather than dropping it every time it crops up.

at any rate, i've never had any complaints. for me, what crosses the line is when people include the accents (even dropped gs) in the narration rather than limiting it to dialogue. drives me nuts.

Wait do people really do this??

it's not common, but it definitely happens.

verbal is fine, texting is not

all shit in games is translated and i'm sure you have autocorrect and most people other than scottish twitter don't type out their accents

i have autocorrect turned off and type how i talk, which sometimes means dropped g so it can definitely happen

i also think texting the way the character would sans autocorrect conveys little things about the character i find interesting? do they chat speak, are they a little stupid, do they prefer perfect grammar/punctuation, are they too fuckin lazy to finish their thoughts sometimes, are they self-centered so intentionally capitalize singular pronoun 'i's? slipping in little subconscious ticks can be a lot of fun
