All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

wish there was smth in between a meme and a game in terms of commitment. like dressing rooms were good for that bc u had an actual setting and continuity but it was low pressure/low commitment like memes.

i know dressing rooms have been out of style for 1 million years but i wonder if someone (probably me) could get an "appless/open game" kind of thing off the ground??? like there'd be a setting and a plot and events just like a game, but no apps, people can just jump in and jump back out as they please.

Things to keep in mind:

Don't half-ass the opening. Put as much effort into building the dressing room's foundations as you would a game.

Pre-plan a few months of events, and commit to polishing them when posting them. Treat them like you would post a test drive meme or a bakerstreet meme. Give people a good excuse to be there.

Consider allowing people to comment to an equivalent of a 'taken' page in order to post, so that players have a general idea of who is around, and so that players feel more connection to the DR and other players. Giving some structure here is what elevates the DR from a whimsical meme that people can spam with characters and never tag out in.

In short, build a game but consider alternatives that allow self-monitoring and maintenance, and provide the framework that players can use to generate and roll with CR. Don't post half-finished things or anything that you would scoff at if you saw it in a game, keep it tight.

That is how a successful dressing room do

genessia has been successful enough and some people have said they'd like to see some other premises with the lax AC and lack of apps they have.

sws and www should be an idea of not what to do with a dressing room.

I haven't looked there in years, but whoof, no kidding.

seconding the qa concerns from another anon! would you consider having like a tdm/testing comm for sandbox stuff, and then make a bare-bones app consisting of a tdm thread and maybe a brief form or something? at least that'd set a minimum bar.

i probably wouldn't do apps, but maybe a form of some sort? i mean, there would definitely be active mod presence, so if like, that master decided to show up, they'd get an insta-ban.

i want both but i also want quality assurance

i know games don't even encourage it but there was just something about dressing rooms that brought out the literal worst players and they'd barrel through and drive everyone else out and away

that's a tough one when it comes to quality and a dressing room. the one thing that works in genessia's favor is there is a setting in place and mod involvement.

i personally want somewhere where i can fuck around with new characters, and sometimes bakerstreet doesn't always work for this.

Whereas what I'm looking for a series of events that I can tag into over the course of, say, two to six months with a character that I'm really feeling it for but for whom I don't want the pressure of keeping up with a game. I'd rather have a dressing-room equivalent that fostered CR development as a priority while being open enough that you could get that with a brand new character...

So I guess the idea of having a TDM for everyone, and a form you could fill out to list your character as a longer-standing one might be nice? That way I could have a mix of new CR and continued if I was really enjoying the character I was playing there.

Just remember that you might not get us all in one game and that's okay. If you find a direction that suits and some people are biting, you don't need to cast your net too much wider!

What kind of setting are you considering?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-11 08:05 am (UTC)(link)
I have nothing to add except I love this thread, applaud you for having the motivation to consider making this, and would totally want to join it. I know a lot of my friends would too. We're too busy for real games but crave continuity in a very relaxed setting.

i hope you make this, op. something in between sounds, well, just right.
