All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

I recently picked up some activity on Bakerstreet and the bizarre way the meme RPing seems to be happening is least to say baffling. Every day there's at least a couple of memes, they seem to expire really quickly. No new replies after a couple of days. Everyone posts a top level but very few tag into them. How do you even hope to attract the attention of the players outside of people who watch this comm daily when the memes move on so quickly? You'll have to be posting into everything daily or you're buried in the dust of time.

It must be a nightmare for anyone who just happens to want some RP fun randomly and comes looking for something out of the blue.

Also, it seems like a lot of bother to post a new meme, mostly from what I see, for the benefit of only a couple of threads. Because around 90% of the replies in a meme are top levels and sometimes a rare tag-in.

And before someone points it out, I do know that I need to be proactive myself to get threads and I have been. I don't really have a problem with finding stuff to RP. Even when I played in games I did the legwork of tagging into other people's posts and toplevels rather than posting my own.

All this just seems so strange to me. I'm not trying to point any fingers here, just genuinely confused as to how is this supposed to work?

it's been working for several years now. live with it.

working poorly. it's not the only example of rp in memes from the past decade of rping and definitely not the one that has been the most active or fun

it's a shitty system that's been in desperate need of an overhaul for a long time now, but dwrp is a collection of womanchildren who shit their size 9 panties at the thought of change. the only thing that's going to get meme culture around here to do anyhting differently from how it's always been done is the current system literally becoming unusable, like what happened with livejournal.

as long as any shitheel can spray page 1 with 5,000 bland white ocs in blank starters, it's gonna keep on as it is. just be the change you want to see and keep hoping.

of course, all will be forgiven if it's 500 non-white characters.

nice bait, anon, but it'd still be annoying and boring as hell.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
so what's the point of bringing up skin color?

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
this may come as a shock, but rpers tend to fetishize non-whites.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-10 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
anon it's a reference to how interchangeable a lot of fad LA characters are, right down to the skin color

you could say the same about anime fad characters, just a wall of skinny japanese teenagers

you've answered your own question here. people tag into bakerstreet with low expectations, and a low level of commitment. memes exists as a counter-option to games, which require apps and structure. if you want to just plunk someone in a thread, then you go to a meme. if you want to do some impulse rping, you go to a meme. if you have plurk friends, you can link your top level and be like "yo i'm in the mood for this, anybody wanna tag?" and it's easy.

honestly, most of the good activity i get on bakerstreet manifests either in the above plurk way, or i see a (usually rare) canonmate i really want to tag. i'm generally not going to waste my time otherwise.

I think some people do have more overarching stuff in memes than what you suggest. I'm sure most people who play in games probably do use memes like you said, but it seems to me that there probably could be more to it too. At least I hope so. I am so done with games but I'd like to do more than tickle the occasional fancy with some TFLN meme.

Before I got into games, I would go through bakerstreet and attempt to create a sort of ongoing CR thing with a few characters. It worked about one third of the time, I think. Many people tend to drop, which can be frustrating... but you'll find that one nugget of gold among the grains of sand. All I can suggest is that if you do find someone who seems to tag on the regular, try to contact them via PM and ask if they want to keep it rolling. It's nice to make a connection!

I actually find that most of my tags in memes tend to carry over into other memes. I mean, some won't work, like 'last words' but most of the other memes start out as the character first meeting or interacting and most of the people that I've had complete threads with and then gone on to either tag in other memes or been tagged by in other memes carry over whatever happened in the first thread and build on that. I haven't got the time to commit to a game myself and I like the ability to hop themes and situations quickly that memes give me but I've had some good luck with finding regular rp partners on memes that extend beyond just one thread. Your best bet is to tag out and to pay attention to regulars in memes that seem to carry threads for more than three tags. As pointed out, its not hard to spot them, considering the majority of a meme will be empty top tags and single tag threads.
