and yeah, i like a lot of everything. classical, rock, hip hop, trance, blues. i think the only genres i don't like are polka, christian rock, and speed metal. and no, i don't have a favorite band. i rarely like everything from one band. i'll like a few songs here or there, not everything this band/singer puts out.

gee, amazing how different people can like different things in different ways. almost like we're not a hivemind.

preferring a few genres or even just one doesn't make anybody limited, lmao. how does having just one favorite make you limited? rock is my favorite but i still like pop, metal, electronic, classical, etc.

when people ask for your favorite, you don't have to choose one, hope that helps. if somebody pesters you to "just choose one tho!" then you can tell them to shove it. if you don't have a favorite band, you can just say "i don't have a favorite but i really like blues music!"

i don't think they're liars, but it does annoy me to no end when i ask what they listen to and they say that

how am i supposed to have a conversation with someone that doesn't even know what they like? are they literally incapable of even the most basic of introspection that they don't even know what their personal preferences are? wtf

fyi, not having a favorite doesn't mean they don't like something. you can have the same conversation with them as you would with anyone else. they can still like what you like. it's just not their number one favorite.

nah i just have literally no attention span so my favorite band or genre at any given moment is just flavor of the week

one week ill be like, EDM is my life, and the next ill be listening to fuzzy low-fi, and the next idk fuckin violin covers or smth

I used to be a music elitist too. Everyone else thinks you're a jackass when this subject comes up, just saying. Like another anon said, I am assuming you're still in high school or recently graduated.

I'm too busy with real-life responsibilities to consistently keep up with a narrow group of bands or musicians anymore. I like whatever sounds good at the moment I'm listening to it.

this thread makes me hate music

When I was a kid I had strong feelings about things like alanis morissette and the lion king soundtrack and dance mix 96, but my friends constantly upbraided me for not being into more popular music like backstreet boys and nsync. I admit that I still freeze up when people I don't know well ask me what I like. Usually I throw those answers out there because I'd rather push the question back on them than take a swing and a miss of [insert terrible choice in music here and/or groping for the names of bands that I have really been enjoying but can't remember the name of]

Basically I came from a bland-ass suburb town and currently lie to cover my tracks because having a discussion at all about music is about as appealing to me as getting a tooth pulled.

if somebody's going to judge you for your taste in music not being what's In, they're not worth talking to.

what's peeving me right now is the fact that last.fm has apparently been in their shitty beta for over a year and they're losing usefulness for me.

i used to just add musicians to my library and then check out the recommendations but now it's a pain in the ass. okay, i can deal with actually scrobbling music now to add them to my library since that's the main use of the site, but i can't dismiss recommendations that i either don't like or i already listen to. it can recommend me a band in one link and show me a musician that's similar to THAT SAME DAMN MUSICIAN right next to it. what the hell?!

yeah, i know that i can just go on a musician's page and click on similar artists... but i like personalized recs! and some musicians pop up on multiple musicians' similar artists.

also? garbage musicians being more popular than my faves in the same genre.

one example clearly has an advantage with a parent being very popular (also in the same genre) and i hate him. i've tried listening to a lot of his songs but they're all terrible except for one and he's undeserving of a spot in my music library if he can't give me at least 2 good songs in his top 10 songs on last.fm. it's my "rule" goes for everybody, not just him. if i listened to all of a musician's songs to give them a chance, i'd have no time for music that i actually like. /extreme buttfury!

Why do people try to talk about music? The regular population don't have the language to talk about it meaningfully so it's always just, "Have you heard this band? They're good." It bores me to tears.

At least with movies and books you can explain plots or real reasons why you like them.

god i despise people like you. you know why i tell people i don't have a favorite band/genre? because i don't listen to music. i've never bought a CD, i don't listen to the radio, and the idea of sitting around doing nothing but listening to an album bores me to tears. it's background noise for me to listen to when i'm driving and forget about the minute i turn it off.

i'm not a music person. get the fuck over it.

how are you even able to listen to anything with your head that far up your ass

ASMR videos make me want to peel all of my skin off and roll in a burning pool of petrol. I feel viscerally sick whenever I hear it.

sadly I also have this reaction to sounds like noises people make with their mouths while eating, cooking videos with the "cooking" sounds turned way up, and the exaggerated sound of liquid being poured into a glass that's used in commercials.
