All the pretty little anons

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

very religious characters

any tips for playing characters who are committed to religions you know next to nothing about?

obviously i am going to read up on the religion but any common pitfalls to avoid would be good. never played a character like this before and don't want to offend anyone.

if it's not shown in detail in the canon and you don't know much about it, it may be a better idea to handwave things where you can, rather than risk making a fuckery of someone's beliefs/culture. if it is shown in detail in canon, though, it's most likely fine to just follow canon's lead-- unless you discover something that makes you want to handwave that, too.

what religion is it specifically? there might be some people on here who are from that religion and can give you basic 101 pointers (like catholic masses are short, baptist masses are long sort of pointers)

Stick with what the canon shows and handwave anything else. Also when it comes to research, make sure to read about the author before reading the text. A lot of religious works especially can be full of bias and propaganda. Certain religions are especially bad about the propaganda. You want to be sure anything you read is written by someone who actually practices the religion.

Another thing to bear in mind is that many canons do get it wrong when it comes to some religions, this is especially true for non-mainstream religions, but canons related to mainstream ones will do this as well since they may be satire or purposely trying to make the religion look bad. The more the religion is disliked by Christians, the more you should expect bias and inaccuracy in a canon that portrays it, unless the canon is created by those who actually practice the religion.

I'd also recommend to have an opt out post. Religion is a topic that can easily offend people no matter how good of a portrayal you have and how hard you try not to offend. Better safe than sorry here and for all you know, no one may opt out. But it's better to have the option available because someone will bitch if they have to PM you to say they don't want to be tagged by this character.
