rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

How do you guys deal with RL friends knowing about your fandoms?

my rl friends who are into fandom can do w/e they want, since they get it
my rl friends who aren't into fandom would never bothering looking into that stuff anyway

is this a hypothetical question or are you dealing w some stalkers

Whoops, you got me - It's not like I'd consider it stalking, but I accidentally piqued some good friends' curiosity about my fandom works while I was drunk. I normally come across as being innocent and even shy, so they were all really amused to think that I actually write smutty fanfic for a hobby.

I guess the cat is out of the bag already, but I'd still prefer that they didn't know the specifics.

Im fine with my rl friends knowing my fandoms/that I rp and I mention it every now and then. I guess I'd be fine with them reading my threads, but none of them have ever expressed any interest in doing so. If they were more fandomy I might encourage them to join my game.

a rl friend and i are both into rp, but in separate parts of the internet

we give each other vague updates about our ships and plotlines on occasion, but apart from that, we mutually give each other space and never share the writing itself-- usually not even the names of the characters. no real reason why, except we're sort of both shy about it.

I use separate e-mail addresses, writing styles, and names for all my online IDs. RP is the most far removed.

It's worked well so far. No one's found me out, and I plan to keep it that way. RP is my escape from the rest of the shit I have going on, I keep it as separate as possible and then some.

rl friends also into fandom, no problem sharing with them. in high school, had a few who knew my fanfic account name and would read/reply to my fics. actually got one of them to join rp with me, for a few years anyway, and another i would tell all about my games and threads and the like.

buuut i wouldn't want them reading my nsfw stuff. wouldn't go far to hide my stuff though, they're not really the kind to bother tracking my rp activity.

I hide my power level when I'm out and about. I don't feel like being judged for being too deep.

i only have two rl friends (i have lots of acquaintances i hang out with but i dont consider us friends) and both of them are into fandoms too so yeah? one of them rps here too and we read each other's threads. or we did. we dont rp very much anymore lmao

id be alright with showing my other one my threads if i thought she'd be interested, but i think she'd find it boring since we like different fandoms.

im not a super private person, i babble to everyone about my rp bullshit. family, coworkers, friends...tbh they are just as interested as when i start going on about whatever tv show/video game/movie im into at the moment, it's just something interesting to hear about when we don't have anything better to talk about. not a big deal.

although to be fair i dont do smut, and if i did i would probably leave that stuff out and just talk about gen threads, because i dont consider porn to be a topic of polite conversation...

my rl friends know i'm into fandom but they don't know i rp

i try to keep rp as far away from rl as possible so they don't find out. i use completely separate emails and handles and everything so i think i'm fine.

all my RL friends are fandom nerds who also write fic and do embarrassing things so if they came looking, whatever. they know I RP and they don't care. I know they write shitty self-insert Mary Sue fanfic and I don't care.

I mean shit, if they actually found my journals and stumbled on my smut threads, I expect the reaction would be to tell me whether or not it was hot. I'd take it as a compliment.

I link friends to threads that I think they'd be into (if they know one or both characters or like one or both characters) so I really don't care all that much.

I'm not very confident in my smut writing but if I'm feeling it I'll send that too if I know they're interested. doesn't bother me!
