if finn and poe were played by two white guys and kylo and hux were played by black and latino men i 100% assure you no one would have latched onto general “side character who has maybe a handful of lines and is generally unpleasant and unforgivably evil” hux as much as they have to fill up his ao3 tag with over a thousand fics centered around him. it’s so frustrating that even when the white guy characters are, for once, sidelined to barely any lines and deplorable personalities, they still get proportionately more love and attention from the fanbase than beautifully written and portrayed black and latino main characters.

that said after endless fandoms that sidelined poc main characters i am overjoyed that finn and poe are so popular and well-loved and actually shipped with people.

before tfa came out i was betting that finn and rey would be totally ignored by fandom, and the big ship would be hux or poe (who is poc but white passing let's not get into racewank today) with kylo ren. i was totally completely wrong and i'm so pleased

I mean I disagree with most of what the other person is saying, but I thought that hux/ren wasn't going to be that big and its fucking insanely huge.

ao3 isn't the only metric of what's big in fandom, anon. and while it's true that hux/ren has way more fics than necessary, finn/poe is no slouch either. they were about even last time i checked.

i don't even care who's winning. the fact that finn/poe and finn/rey haven't been ignored into total obscurity has completely exceeded my expectations.

am i satisfied? no. but is this a huge improvement over the fandoms of only two or three years back? fuck yes, and i have every right to be happy about that

idk why people say this because the fact is that when poc have good writing, people do like them

everyone is all over t'challa in mcu because the character was actually good, and sam and rhodey got great moments as well

i think that's certainly true now, and i'm happy about it, but it wasn't true a few years back. scrubs fandom ignores the male friendship between jd and turk (that was even lampshaded as overly close and borderline romantic) to ship jd with a white doctor. inception fandom sidelined the female character in favor of dudeslash. shows with prominent poc and female characters were generally ignored.

i think it's a combination of issues. fandom has gotten better about caring, yes, but also there are more poc and women in genre fandoms where before fantasy and scifi were a lily white sausage fest, and the writing of those characters has improved. so i'm not totally blaming fandom, but fandom has sidelined good characters in the past and it colored my expectations going forward.

inception is a bad example, it had maybe one character at best

sam and rhodey have been sidelined by this fandom for years. i rarely see sam shipped in fanfic and i don't know if i've EVER seen rhodey, even in fics that include maria hill and people who aren't in the MCU yet. people pay them lipservice but when it's time to walk the walk we still fail hugely.

i might read a heimdall fanfic. heimdall and ... anyone. voyeuristic god has to have some kinky perversions.

I'm just as cross about the lack of Sam but let's not even try to pretend Rhodey has ever been a compelling or interesting character. He's Tony's boring friend who does nothing, means nothing and is his accidental antagonist 1/4th of the time. He has no real story or character to him, especially in the MCU universe.

Sam is fucking interesting. Rhodey is just a cardboard cutout with a voice who sometimes puts up with Tony's bs and sometimes doesn't. Him being black has little to do with people not fanficing/shipping him. Him being an uninteresting piece of military shit has a much bigger role there.

And yeah I'm sure you'll whine about other people with just as little character/interest being shipped but the fact remains that there is nothing to rhodey. His actor is boring and flat, and as a result so is his character. Even CW couldn't make me give half a fuck about him for anything but two seconds, and that was because Tony Stank is comedy gold.

and yet people seem to have no trouble shipping hawkeye, who's just as boring as rhodey.

It's a fucking Star Wars movie. Let's not exaggerate.

if anything, finn was one of the biggest problems with it. it makes little to no sense how the death of a stormtrooper he knows makes him defect, yet he's able to kill them like it's nothing later on during the movie. they could have just shown him non-lethally taking them out, but nope.

also the fact that he has as much personality as he does despite all the years of brainwashing or training or whatever is eyebrow worthy if nothing else.

I see what you're saying but it's not even that huge of a difference. Finn and Poe aren't unpopular, neither is Finn/Poe as a ship. If you want to talk unpopular, Finn/Rey is the real loser here with 593 tagged works.
