You sound fat

Rundown: [community profile] rpanons is an anonymous community for role-play related topics. This place serves as a forum for game discussions, canon discussions, RP solicitations (ATP, game ads, open memes), and advice. The occasional off topic comment is inevitable, but please keep heated social and political topics to their respective communities. Posting them here will only get them frozen. Subsequent threads made to bypass a freeze will then be deleted.

Rules:

Do not post pornographic or shocking images.
Do not share private entries, plurks, chat logs, etc.
Do not use this community as your social/political/hatespeech soapbox.
Do not be redundant. One page does not need three or more threads on one topic/theme. Your unfunny, forced memes also fall under this rule.
Do not treat this comm like your personal therapist. Threads about nonfictional suicide, self injury, rape, and abuse will be deleted. There are better resources out there for you.
Do not treat this comm like your personal Plurk or Twitter. Off-topic happens, but it should be open for discussion and not just a play-by-play of your life. No one cares.
Shut up about Tumblr. If it's not a discussion about Tumblr RP it will be deleted.

i wish i was savvy enough to play hannibal. hopkin's hannibal.

well like

the thing about characters like this is they work in their own canon. i'm sure there's a lot of relatively stupid, for-kids media that has super-genius characters who could outsmart hannibal. which is unrealistic as fuck but that's what happens when you play in a panfandom game. it's near impossible to play characters like that unless everyone's willing to bend their own canon to fit yours. so you either make a ton of sacrifices or don't play them

but if you're talking memes/psls, who cares? who's judging? play him if it sounds fun and do your best. doesn't matter as much.

For what it's worth I don't think he became Renaissance Man supergenius until Hannibal Rising.

Yep. Additionally, when playing against characters like Hannibal, I'll add some info about my character's behavior and psyche that someone like Hannibal would likely pick up on, a lot of people do, in my experience, so long as they know it's ic for your canon (and this one's pretty iconic, so you're in luck!).

I'd focus more on getting his voice right. His astuteness and insight into his opponent can be faked convincingly with ooc canon knowledge and a bit of help from your rp partner. Most people like talking about their character and their inner workings, anyway. So if you'd enjoy playing him, go for it!

In addition to the tips other anons have given, I'd say be very careful to not infomod or have him become outright psychic. He is incredibly observant, and there's that whole memory palace perfect recall stuff, but he is not superhuman.

Ideally other players would clue you in on exactly what Hannibal would be capable of picking up from their character like an anon above mentioned, but there's an abundance of players obsessed with their characters being The Best, and may not cooperate. Because they hate fun, I guess. Just ignore those types and move on, their pissing contests aren't worth it.

I haven't seen NBC's Hannibal but I'm familiar with Hopkins' and the novels, and personally I'd love to see one being played and encourage you to try him. I played Ed Norton's Will Graham ages ago on LJ and never did encounter any decent Hannibals, it was a shame.

yeah, i have considered characters like him in the past and i think they might just be the hardest character type to play. One quality about them that I haven't seen brought up yet (and part of why they're so tricky) is that they notice things that are so pinpoint that often the characters themselves don't notice them. like hannibal with will and starling, he notices stuff so precise that i'm not sure any rper gives it thought (lbr how often does shaving even come up in rp, let alone an rper knowing what kind of shaving lotion their character uses?)

Add to that the very easy pit of infomodding that you can fall into plus that these kind of characters tend to have irascible personalities that rub both players and characters the wrong way and you have a character that plays kind of like preparing a puffer fish, very delicious if prepared in an exact way but toxic if you slip off the rails even a little bit. i used to know a sherlock player who just infomodded like crazy, they drove me nuts but after considering how i'd play the character i started understanding how easy it'd be to fall into that trap

i'm not saying don't play him, but definitely know what you're getting into (and it sounds like you do)
